Pokemon GO Will No Longer Work on Old Apple Devices

The update will affect anyone who can't upgrade to iOS 11.

NewsMatthew Byrd
Jan 10, 2018

Niantic has announced that older Apple devices will no longer support Pokemon GO

"In an upcoming update to Pokémon GO, we will end support for Apple devices not capable of upgrading to iOS 11, such as iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c models," said the developer in a blog post. "This change is a result of improvements to Pokémon GO that push the application beyond the capabilities of the operating systems on such devices. This change will take effect on 02/28/2018. After that date, Trainers using affected devices may no longer be able to access their Pokémon GO accounts from that device, or use their PokéCoins or other items in their Bags."

As noted in the blog post, anyone who is able to perform the iOS 11 update on their Apple device will still be able to player Pokemon GO. Otherwise, you might be out of luck. That also applies to older models of iPad.

Given the reported adoption rates of new Apple devices, this update probably won't affect the majority of iPhone owners and Pokemon GO players. However, this news serves as a reminder that the modern world of smartphone technology makes it almost impossible for those who are otherwise happy with their older devices to continue using them for an extended period of time.

Of course, most iPhone owners are probably well aware of this considering that Apple released a statement not too long ago in which they informed owners of older iPhone models that they were intentionally slowing older devices in order to improve the performance of modern and future technology. Niantic seems to be supporting that sentiment by stating that they simply can't support older Apple devices with the updates they have in the works.

Niantic has not released a similar message regarding older Android devices no longer being supported. Until such a statement is released, owners of old Android devices should expect to be able to continue playing Pokemon GO in the near future.

Destiny 2: Crimson Days Event Revealed

Bungie might need more than a few digital roses to convince fans that they love them.

NewsMatthew Byrd
Jan 10, 2018

The next Destiny 2 event will pay homage to everyone's favorite filler holiday designed to boost those post-Christmas sales figures, Valentine's Day.

The event, called Crimson Days, first appeared in the original Destiny back in 2016. The event was highlighted by a new 2 vs. 2 mode designed to inspire players to form competitive couples. It was lowlighted by the overwhelmingly negative reaction the event inspired amongst hardcore players.

While hardcore Destiny fans are kind of famous for their overwhelmingly negative reactions to Destiny content, they did have a point so far as the Crimson Days event was concerned. The event simply didn't offer enough substantial content, and the content it did offer - new shaders, emotes, and holiday-specific items - were plagued by what Bungie later admitted was a drop rate that was way lower than intended.

In fact, Bungie has already informed Destiny fans on Reddit that they've learned from their mistakes and plan on making this incarnation of Crimson Days much more substantial.

"The rumors are True. Crimson Days is coming back," said Destiny's community manager. "It won't be the same as last time. We will talk about how it is changing in the blog update on Thursday."

The rumors that Bungie is referring to are a series of screenshots that fans found hidden in Destiny 2's code which seemed to showcase some of the themed items included as part of the now confirmed Crimson Days event. Along with the usual array of holiday-specific skins and shaders, these leaked screens seem to indicate that this event will affect existing in-game content in some way. At present, it's not yet known exactly what kind of effect the event will have on the game and whether or not the 2 vs. 2 mode form the original Crimson Days will return.

Recent reports regarding the reason behind Destiny 2's shaky launch and seeming lack of substantial content have fans hoping that events like Crimson Days will be more frequent and much more bountiful.

Total War comes to ancient China in this stunning debut trailer.

Shortly after the Total War team teased the announcement of their next game, a group of fans leaked the intended reveal. As such, the developers decided to just go ahead and release the trailer for Total War: Three Kingdoms

This game is already being met with widespread acclaim from Total War fans who have eagerly waited for developer Creative Assembly to develop another historical Total War title. The only Total War games the studio has developed since 2015's Total War: Attila have all taken place in the Warhammer universe. While those games received quite a bit of critical acclaim, they didn't quite satisfy the need for grand-scale historical conflicts.

Three Kingdoms looks to provide just that by taking Total War players on a trip to 190CE China. Dynasty Warrior fans will no doubt be familiar with the Three Kingdoms period the game recreates, but this is Total War's first trip to the era.

The game will likely focus on the conflict between portrayed in the famous Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel, but we wouldn't be surprised if this title expands upon the conventions and characters established by that story so that players will have more leaders and units to choose from. That said, a Total War game that focuses on just a few leaders and the legendary soldiers they control might be a nice change of pace.

Speaking of legendary soldiers, it seems likely that Three Kingdoms will retain the Legendary Lords mechanic utilized in the Total War: Warhammer series. This system allows players to grow a single warrior that can be used to turn the tide in multiple battles.

Unfortunately, we don't really know much more about Three Kingdoms at this time. However, it seems that Creative Assembly intends to release the game before the end of the year for PC. As such, we hope to bring you more details soon.

R-Type Getting a Cartridge Reissue for the Super Nintendo

Hankering for a blast on R-Type III and Super R-Type? Then this cartridge reissue for the Super Nintendo has you covered...

NewsRyan Lambie
Jan 11, 2018

Collecting retro games can be extremely expensive - particularly if you're into amassing a collection of classic shooters from the '80s and '90s.

Take R-Type, for example; while you can easily get a port of the original for your Android or iPhone these days, just try finding a cheap copy of Super R-Type or R-Type III on eBay. First released for the Super Nintendo way back in 1991 and 1993 respectively, these shooter sequels have since become incredibly scarce - meaning that even a loose cartridge, particularly of R-Type III: The Third Lightning, is now pretty expensive.

Obviously, you could go down the legally questionable route of roms and emulation, but there's another alternative on the way if you're after a physical copy. Purveyors of new hardware for old systems, Retro-Bit is in the process of making a reissue cartridge of both Super Nintendo games; for the princely sum of $59.99, you'll get both Super R-Type and R-Type IIIon one piece of plastic.

Via online outlet CastleMania Games, there'll be an exclusive collector's edition, too, where the cart will come with a box, slipcase, stickers, a manual and some other bonus bits and pieces. It's a neat-looking set, and the price is fairly reasonable, particularly in light of how much the originals now go for on eBay.

There's another old Irem game on offer, too: a reissue of Holy Diver, an obscure, Castlevania-like platformer for the NES that, with its gothic design and rock-hard difficulty level, has a cult following.

Again, the cartridge will come in a box with manual, stickers and other bonus items for the price of $59.99.

Yes, it's a lot of money to pay for games that are hurtling towards their 30th birthdays, but if you're an avid collector of ageing classics, they may be an enticing proposition.

Pre-orders will go live on the 19th January 2018, with the collector's editions limited to 1000 copies each.

After many rumors, we can finally confirm that Dark Souls is being remastered for the Nintendo Switch. It's also believed that the remaster will be released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

The official announcement came via today's mini Nintendo Direct video.

Unfortunately, we're still waiting for details regarding how this game will remaster Dark Souls and how it will perform on Nintendo Switch. What we can tell you is that it will be released for the Nintendo Switch on May 25th. There's no official word on whether or not it will be released for all platforms on that day.

It's currently believed that this port is being developed by an outside studio commissioned by From Software. This studio will reportedly utilize Dark Souls 3 technology when upgrading the original game's lighting and effects. Furthermore, there are rumors that suggest the game's multiplayer modes will be expanded to incorporate six concurrent players.

It's also been suggested that From Software will eventually port all three Dark Souls games to Switch, but that rumor is unconfirmed at this time.

The original Dark Souls turns seven this year, and we're just now starting to feel the full weight of its influence. At the time of its release, the game was hailed by Demon's Souls fans and those new to the series as one of the greatest Action-RPG titles ever made. Dark Souls' brilliant boss fights, incredible combat system, punishing difficulty, learn by doing design, and intricate worlds made it a revolution in game design that is often cited by modern developers as a turning point in the industry.

What we're saying here is that Nintendo Switch owners who haven't yet been able to experience the game - or just want to take it with them wherever they may roam - are going to want to add this remaster to their wishlist.

Story mode makes its glorious return to the Mario Tennis franchise.

During today's Nintendo Direct announcement, the studio revealed Mario Tennis Aces for Nintendo Switch.

The brief footage shown of the game during the announcement suggests that it is going to be a visually impressive title (for a Nintendo Switch Mario Tennis game, that is) that will utilize a more complex series of mechanics. Specifically, the trailer noted that players will need to pay more attention to their opponent's shot selection and positioning in order to beat them.

Even better, Mario Tennis Aces will be the first Mario Tennis game since the Game Boy Advance Tennis titles to incorporate a story mode. As anyone who played those games - or the brilliant Switch title Golf Story - knows, these sports story modes tend to be incredibly entertaining detours from the competitive play that are loaded with creative minigames. That seems to be what this new story mode is going for, but it also seems that this particular mode might abandon the tennis academy setting of previous Mario Tennis stories in favor of something a little wackier.

Thankfully, the mode is expected to include those wonderful boss battles from previous titles.

Regardless of the story's setting, we're just happy to see that mode return. We're also quite thrilled to see Nintendo return to Mario Tennis so quickly after 2015's Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash was met with an overwhelmingly negative reaction. Considering that the primary criticisms of that game revolved around its lack of content and innovations, we'd say that the quick reveal of Mario Tennis Ace's story mode suggests that Nintendo is aware of what went wrong and is willing to fix it.

We can't wait to get our hands on this game when it releases for Nintendo Switch sometime in the spring.

They Are Billions: An RTS Game That Makes Zombies Scary Again

$

It's been too long since we truly feared an approaching horde of the undead. Steam's latest hit changes that.

FeatureMatthew Byrd
Jan 11, 2018

Somewhere along the way, it was decided that zombies are only scary if they run as fast as Twitter users rush to their computers to tell the world which celebrity should be President of the United States.

The idea of an undead creature sprinting towards you is certainly frightening, but the same can be said about any monster and most humans. What’s always separated zombies is the idea of the horde. You may be able to best a single zombie, but what chance do you have against a hive mind army that knows no fear yet instills it through tireless assaults?

They Are Billions, an early access game on Steam from developer Numantian Games that is currently tearing up the sales charts, understands that the true terror of zombies is tied to the seemingly inevitable victory of the horde.

Those familiar with the Age of Empires series will feel right at home with They Are Billions. Like Microsoft’s classic real-time strategy games, Billions utilizes a somewhat simple RTS interface that emphasizes progression and resource management over micromanaging every unit and colony.

While you’re recruiting workers, chopping wood, and collecting food, zombies patrol the parameter of your settlement and threaten to infect the population. A single zombie can cause a chain reaction of infection by attacking just one tent. As such, you’ll need to build walls, manage defensive structures, and order units to patrol the area around your camp.

However, lone zombies only really threaten new players who haven’t yet learned the game’s mechanics. I learned this the hard way when a walker destroyed my entire settlement while I was learning how to gather rocks. Once you gain a basic understanding of the game, though, the real threat comes from the horde.

There are always groups of zombies surrounding your encampment, but every once in a while - the timetable changes based on your preferred difficulty settings - you’ll be informed that a horde of zombies is approaching from a cardinal direction. To be blunt, you’ll likely succumb to the first horde you encounter. The warning you receive gives you enough time to make last minute preparations, but successful defenses require long-term planning.

Even the best long-term strategies can only take you so far, though. As the number of zombies in the horde reaches the billions, your chances of victory become slimmer and slimmer. It’s possible to “win” They Are Billions' survival mode by lasting long enough, but you shouldn’t expect to reach that point without enduring countless failed attempts.

Much like PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and FTL, They Are Billions’ entertainment value is based on the belief that you will suffer through defeat after defeat so long as there’s just a little light at the end of the tunnel that teases you into believing that you can do better. Every loss you endure triggers the belief that you can and will do better the next time because you know exactly why you failed.

Your optimism will prove to be foolish more often than not, but that’s okay. The joy of playing They Are Billions doesn’t come from watching the horde fall at the feet of your military but from the thrill of seeing how large you can grow your settlement and how long you can watch it stand.

What a novel concept that is. Too often, modern zombie stories are reduced to the visceral pleasure of watching waves of undead succumb to gunfire or the tired concept of every remaining human somehow hating each other at the end of the world. Both approaches turn zombies into bit players in a human power fantasy.

Zombies are not bit players in They Are Billions. As game director Jesús Arribas told PC Gamer, zombies are “the central pillar” of the experience. Every time you attempt to expand your settlement in the pursuit of much-needed resources, you know that you run the risk of encountering a band of zombies that you are not prepared to deal with. Yet, heading into danger is the only way to ensure that your defenses will be anywhere close to ready.

You're not necessarily chasing total victory in They Are Billions. This is the end of the world after all, and your band of buildings has little chance of lasting against a threat that has consumed the world. What you are really looking for is the knowledge that you have built something that will stand strong against seemingly impossible odds for as long as it can.

The zombies in this game exist to test your spirit as well as your defenses. They are a mindless army that can overwhelm your greatest accomplishments through the sheer force of their presence. Yet, you never feel deterred by a zombie victory. You learn to fear what they can accomplish, but you are comforted by the knowledge that your victory is tied to your unwillingness to let them win the day without a fight.

Night of the Living Dead's zombies frightened audiences because they were flesh-eating monstrosities whose relentless and insatiable desire to destroy invoked the fears of those living in a rapidly changing and increasingly scary world. They Are Billions' zombies are the only walkers in recent memory that manage to do the same.

Super Mario Odyssey Free Update Includes Multiplayer Mode

We don't need an excuse to play more Odyssey, but we'll take one.

Jan 11, 2018

In case you've somehow managed to work your way through Super Mario Odyssey's considerable content offerings and are looking for more to do in the game, you'll be thrilled to hear that Nintendo has just announced the first post-release content update for Odyssey.

The highlight of this content release is undoubtedly the reveal of Ballon World. This asynchronous online multiplayer mode will be available to all players who have finished the main story. If you meet that qualification, you'll find Luigi scattered across the game's various worlds. Upon meeting him, he will challenge the player to complete one of what appears to be several balloon-based objectives.

The variation of the mode showcased during the Direct announcement gives players 30 seconds to hide a ballon anywhere on the map. The idea is that you'll use your mastery of the game's maps to find the most obscure and difficult to reach spots in the time that you are given. You will also be able to accept challenges set forth by other players.

Join Amazon Prime - Watch Thousands of Movies & TV Shows Anytime - Start Free Trial Now

It has not been confirmed which other challenges will be included as part of this mode, but the wording of the reveal suggested that this concept will be expanded upon in the future.

Along with the ballon challenges, this update will include a few new costumes and some fancy new photo filters. The update is expected to be released sometime in February and will be free for all Super Mario Odyssey owners.

Nintendo has previously noted that they weren't sure whether or not they would release any DLC for Super Mario Odyssey. Reggie Fils-Aime suggested that the company doesn't demand that every game feature DLC, and that Nintendo prefers to use it as a way for creative directors to express themselves. Given that this is a free update, it seems this might be a case of the Odyssey team simply wanting to add something to the game after the fact.

Superman 64 Speed Run Highlights the Worst Game Ever Made

This is the only way we recommend experiencing this pile of poor programming and bad ideas.

The annual Awesome Games Done Quickly event gives speedrunners everywhere a chance to showcase how fast they can beat some of the best games ever made. However, one of the highlights of the event has long been the early hours of the morning the event's organizers devote to speedrunners who have mastered some of the worst games ever made. This block - affectionately known as awful games done quickly - proves that some truly bad games are way more entertaining when they're beaten really fast.

The highlight of this year's awful games done quickly block was undoubtedly headstrong1290's run of Superman 64.

Get a Free Trial of GameFly on Us!

If you are one of the many fortunate gamers who has never played Superman 64, you first need to know that it might be the absolute worst game ever made. This maligned take on the man of steel sees Superman participate in a kind of virtual reality game organized by Lex Luthor. As boring as that sounds, it gets worse once you realize that the whole virtual reality angle was conceived as an excuse to cover up for the fact that developer Titus Software was batting way out of their league with the development of this game. They simply didn't have the programming knowledge needed to make their ambitious plans for the game come to life.

That's a really, really nice way of saying that Superman 64 is an incredibly broken game that mostly consists of having players fly through rings.

Speedrunner headstrong1290 elected to play the game on easy mode, which thankfully removes the need to fly through rings. Apparently, that would have added almost an hour of misery to the run's total time.

That doesn't mean the playthrough was smooth sailing, though. Indeed, this almost 40-minute playthrough of the game really is the best way to experience one of the lowest points in video game history. We're particularly amazed by the villains who resemble shadows with guns, level skipping glitches that require players to do little more than walk through locked doors, a subway level filled with hostages you don't actually need to save, and Superman using his ice breath to stop tornadoes.

It's a stunning spectacle of awful decisions that headstrong1290 navigates with amazing ease.

The wave of Nintendo character returns continues to roll in with the reveal of a new Kirby game for the Nintendo Switch. The game is called Kirby Star Allies. It will feature both single-player and cooperative play.

While there are quite a few Kirby games in development for the 3DS, it's nice to know that Nintendo is still showing love to one of their longest running mascot platformers by giving him a fully-fledged console experience of his very own.

Hopefully, Nintendo will expand upon how the multiplayer aspects of this game will work as the power combinations shown in the trailer certainly look to build upon traditional Kirby gameplay in many clever ways.

Ubisoft is developing a 4K remaster of 2014's Assassin's Creed Rogue. This remaster will be released on March 20th for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Assassin's Creed Rogue was somewhat overlooked upon its initial release. It was released the same year as the much-maligned Assassin's Creed Unity. That title's many, many technical issues stole most of the headlines that year and left Rogue on the outside looking in.

While Rogue isn't quite as great as the best Assassin's Creed titles, it certainly deserved to be played by more people. It tells the tale of a young settler named Shay Patrick Cormac who has just been recruited into the Colonial Brotherhood of Assassins. The game's American frontier setting will no doubt remind many fans of Assassin's Creed III - another game that's potential was compromised by technical issues - but Rogue actually has more in common with Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. Both emphasize navigation via ship and make the most of some refined mechanics.

This upcoming remaster is being developed by the same studio that originally developed Rogue - Ubisoft Sofia - and figures to greatly enhance the original title's visuals. Given that the original game's visuals were hindered somewhat by the fact that the game needed to be able to run on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, this 4K upgrade should help Rogue look like a proper current gen title.

Unfortunately, there is no word at this time regarding whether or not this remaster will benefit from any other improvements or additional content.

Even if this remaster is just a prettier version of Rogue, that may prove to be enough. Rogue truly is one of the better Assassin's Creed titles and a game the exemplifies why the franchise is still quite popular even though it has undergone relatively few major changes since Assassin's Creed II. It's worth revisiting if you've been craving a classic Assassin's Creedexperience.

SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy Announced with Trailer

This summer, Switch and PlayStation 4 owners will be able to play a new SNK tag fighter featuring the queens of King of Fighters.

NewsGavin Jasper
Jan 12, 2018

It used to be that SNK fighting games flooded the market. You couldn’t Power Dunk through an arcade without coming across some iteration of King of Fighters, Fatal Fury, Last Blade, Art of Fighting, World Heroes, or whatever. There were so damn many of them that their crossovers had crossovers. This dried up in the early 2000s, but luckily a growing chunk of them are available to download on various consoles.

Just picked up King of Monsters on the Switch, myself.

Back in 2016, SNK attempted a comeback with King of Fighters XIV, a fantastic return to glory that contrasted its mediocre graphics with classic gameplay and a massive roster. While we got a smattering of DLC, the days of constant King of Fighters sequels are long over.

Now SNK’s announced a new game to throw in the pile. This summer, the Switch and PlayStation 4 will be getting SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy. The game will feature various SNK women with confirmed characters Athena Asamiya, Kula Diamond, Leona Heidern, Mai Shiranui, and Yuri Sakazaki. All of them appeared in King of Fighters XIV and the cover art also includes the mysterious new character Kukri. Is Kukri actually a woman after all or is it just a coincidence that the fighter is so prominent in the art for a game that boasts a female cast?

Unlike King of Fighters or pretty much any other SNK fighter before it, the gameplay is very, very simple. So simple that there’s only one attack button. Still, the game boasts the use of specials, supers, and use of items that can affect the battle.

The game will have an in-game currency system that leads to playing dress-up with your characters and adding new voice clips. Sadly, no Tekken 7 Bullet Club shirts, as far as I know.

This is the second woman-based SNK fighter since Gals Fighters, a handheld title that featured a cross-dressing and masked Iori Yagami as the final boss “Miss X.”

If for any reason you do not keep up with the weird and wonderful world of Japanese exclusive video games, then you've probably never heard of Detective Pikachu. First released in Japan in 2016, this adventure game follows a young boy who stumbles upon a Pikachu that claims to be a detective. It's not long before they start chasing two condiment wielding creatures who are causing havoc amongst the general population. That leads to a much larger case involving ice beams and other things so weird that we couldn't properly spoil them if we wrote an encyclopedia about the game's plot.

The actual Detective Pikachu gameplay consists mostly of walking around and gathering clues. It's...well, the main draw of the Detective Pikachu experience is certainly the bizarre plot and the game's strange take on the Pokemon universe. So far as that goes, the game's story plays out over the course of two episodic adventures. The second episode of Detective Pikachu is set to release in Japan in March. At the same time, Western gamers will receive a 3DS port that features both Detective Pikachu episodes.

Alongside that Western collection, Nintendo will release a new Detective Pikachu Amiibo. Just look at the size of this thing compared to the old Smash Bros. Amiibo Nintendo previously released:

Don't be surprised if you hear quite a bit about Detective Pikachu in the coming months. Between the game's next episode, its Western release, and the upcoming Detective Pikachu film starring Ryan Reynolds (naturally), it seems that Nintendo is convinced that the sight of Pikachu in a Sherlock Holmes detective get-up is enough to get people to throw their money at several screens.

Frankly, we tend to agree.

New House of the Dead Arcade Game Coming From Sega

Is it practical to move to Japan just for the arcade games? Yes.

NewsMatthew Byrd
Jan 15, 2018

There's nothing quite like a House of the Dead arcade game. Try as they might, the many console ports of the franchise haven't been able to replicate the magic of a true House of the Dead arcade experience.

It seems that Sega might just agree with that sentiment as they've just announced that they are developing a brand-new House of the Deadarcade game.

It's called House of the Dead: Scarlet Dawn, and you can play it at Sega Akihabara Building 3 in Tokyo from January 19th to January 21st. Sega has not announced any plans to expand the availability of this game beyond that initial limited release.

Get a Free Trial of GameFly on Us!

We hope they find a way to bring this game to a global audience, though, because it sounds fascinating. Unlike previous House of the Dead arcade titles, Scarlet Dawn's cabinet is quite the high-end production. It comes equipped with things like vibrating seats, air cannons, and onboard lights all designed to react to the actions of the player. Such effects are fairly common amongst modern arcade games, but they're certainly enhanced by the already appealing allure of the House of the Dead name.

Scarlet Dawn's actual gameplay will also benefit from the influence of modern technology. Would-be survivors can expect to see more zombies on-screen at one time than have ever been featured in a House of the Dead game before. The exact number of zombies hasn't been confirmed, but they do seem to fill the screen quite quickly. Hopefully, players will be dealt a new arsenal of weapons to deal with this expanded army of the undead.

If for any reason this House of the Dead game doesn't make it outside of Japan, we highly recommend that you check out the overlooked The House of the Dead: Overkill to feed your need for a House of the Dead shooter. That game's grindhouse style and b-movie presentation capitalize on the series' history of bad voice acting, questionable dialog, and general insanity.

Of course, you can always play the brilliant typing tutor Typing of the Dead; the best way to learn to speed type while watching zombie's heads explode.

Overwatch League is Being Dominated by a Kid Named Pine

One of Overwatch's most accurate shooters has yet to be stopped.

NewsMatthew Byrd
Jan 15, 2018

Forget the incredible presentation style, the compelling team vs. team rivalries, and the seemingly unstoppable force known as the Seoul Dynasty. The best reason to watch the Overwatch League is a 20-year-old kid named Pine.

Like many Overwatch League stars, Pine hails from South Korea and made a name for himself playing in that country's competitive scene. Unlike some of OverwatchLeague's biggest stars, relatively few players had heard of Pine at the start of the Overwatch League season. Some knew him from his highlight reel plays, but many felt there was a good reason he started the season on the New York Excelsior's bench.

When Pine comes off the bench, though, he dominates the game in a way that few other Overwatch League players can.

Join Amazon Prime - Watch Thousands of Movies & TV Shows Anytime - Start Free Trial Now

In the clip above, we see Pine called off the bench to help New York win the tricky Illios control map. Now, Pine is what is known in Overwatch as a damage per second (DPS) specialist. What that means is that he excels at using precision aim to spread damage across the opposing team and ultimately get the killing blow. To do so, Pine loves to use the hero McCree; a cowboy whose six-shooter requires sniper rifle accuracy without the advantage of a scope.

Clearly, that doesn't bother Pine. His ability to not only identify priority targets across the map but take them out with pixel perfect aim is the kind of thing that most people can't achieve without the help of aimbot cheating software (something Pine has been caught utilizing in Counter-Strike when he was younger). In the second round of Illios, we see Pine almost single-handedly take out the entire opposing team. He even scores a headshot against a Tracer who afforded Pine only milliseconds to establish his angle and recognize the shot.

Proving that his incredible performance in New York's debut match was no fluke, Pine once again came off the bench against the Houston Outlaws and utterly destroyed the competition in a way that shouldn't be possible in professional play.

What's truly amazing about that second video is the way that Pine is able to change targets so quickly as a sniper. There are very good Overwatch players who would freak out if they managed to land just one of the shots that Pine hits with seeming ease.

So why isn't Pine a starter? Well, there seem to be some concerns regarding his ability to replicate his incredible play across multiple maps and multiple modes. Some maps in Overwatch are just suited for players that can seemingly pick off opponents at will. New York happens to have a few excellent DPS players who are, perhaps, a bit more well-rounded.

However, it's going to be hard to keep Pine on the bench for long. He's rapidly becoming Overwatch League's most exciting player. People chant his name when he approaches his station. If Overwatch League is going to grow beyond its initial - admittedly sizeable - audience, it's going to be on the back of players like Pine who do things that even casual shooter fans know that they likely could never replicate.

As it stands, it's worth watching New York Excelsior games just to watch Pine work his magic.

Former designers behind Motorstorm and Driveclub have set up a new studio to make an "unexpected" sci-fi game...

If you loved Motorstorm and Driveclub, then the formation of a new studio in the UK may be of interest to you - though intriguingly, the new firm says its first offering won't be a driving game...

Formally unveiled yesterday, Wushu Studios was recently founded in Liverpool by the former lead developers behind the Motorstorm and Driveclub franchises, and its aim is to create "games with interesting mechanics and unique concepts."

Also on on board is Alex Figini, a concept artist formerly of BioWare, where he worked on the hit Mass Effect 3. Together, the new studio's working on what it described as a "tantalizing and unexpected take" on a sci-fi game. Beyond that, the project remains under wraps, though the studio's press release does add that it's built a prototype in Unreal Engine 4, and that the internal reaction to it has been "extremely positive."

“We firmly believed in the idea that our initial concepts needed to be gamepad experiences as quickly as possible, so we turned to Unreal Engine for its amazing rapid prototyping capabilities," writes studio boss Alan McDermott in the release. "This approach has helped us figure out which of our concepts would allow us to flex our creative muscle most. It’s definitely not what people will be expecting to see from us; it’s absolutely not a racing game!"

That's pretty coy, we're sure you'll agree. With work only beginning on the mystery game in September last year, it may be some time before we hear more; as we get more information, though, we'll be sure to pass it along.

Final Fantasy XV: Royal Edition will include the base Final Fantasy XV game as well as all season pass DLC content (Episode Gladiolus, Episode Prompto, Multiplayer Expansion: Comrades, and Episode Ignis). Furthermore, the Royal Edition will ship with several smaller pieces of DLC that include additions like new weapons, car skins, and item sets.

However, this version of the game is more than just a collection of everything we've seen thus far. It will also feature a brand-new dungeon - Insomnia City Ruins: Expanded Map - and a new version of the Armiger weapon that is described as being more "action-oriented."Royal Edition players will also be able to finally control the Royal Vessel and use it to navigate some of the game's bodies of water.

Finally, the Royal Edition will include a variety of new bosses, equipment, and a first-person mode.

The Royal Editionisn't the only way to experience all of this exclusive gear, bosses, and features. Those who already own the game can download all of it for $19.99. The upcoming Windows edition of Final Fantasy XV will also include all of the Royal Edition content.

Final Fantasy XV was met with a bit of a mixed reaction upon its release. It felt like the game was in development forever, but the final product seemed to be surprisingly unfinished. That's especially true of the game's final act which felt rushed and disconnected from much of the rest of the game.

Still, the Final Fantasy XV DLC has added quite a lot to the game, and it's certainly not as if the base experience is completely devoid of merit. Final Fantasy XV is an often ambitious and exciting game that tells a truly epic tale.

Monster Hunter World's regions are as striking as they are dangerous.

Jan 16, 2018

Monster Hunter World is grand scale Monster Hunter adventure. For those who don't know what that entails, the Monster Hunter franchise is famous for allowing players to carefully stalk and hunt gigantic monsters with the help of weapons straight out of your favorite anime. The games have always been impressive in scope if perhaps a step behind in the visuals department from time to time.

World may certainly help Monster Hunter in that last department, but what really gets us excited is how that technology may improve the core Monster Hunter experience. Monster Hunter World's first trailer featured a rich world covered in dense foliage, complimented by complex lighting systems, and riddled with truly massive creatures. While such technological niceties might be little more than eye candy for another series, the nature of the Monster Hunter franchise means that this visually rich world may actually contribute to the hide and hunt gameplay.

Here's everything we know about this game:

Monster Hunter World News

Two new videos showcase just how lush and varied Monster Hunter World's landscapes truly are.

The video above focuses on the Coral Highlands region, which is notable for looking like a barrier reef if one was somehow above ground. The area's monsters showcase a similarly strange design style that is just as eye-catching.

The other region on display in the latest videos is slightly less beautiful but just as striking.

The Rotten Vale region above is described as the home of some truly terrible creatures who have managed to adapt to this toxic and unforgiving terrain. We're guessing it's not the kind of place you'll want to visit right out of the gate.

Monster Hunter World Release Date

Monster Hunter World will be released for PS4 and Xbox One on January 26, 2018. Capcom noted that a PC version of the game will follow, but they have not confirmed that version's release date at this time.

Monster Hunter World Trailer

A new trailer has arrived for Monster Hunter World. The biggest reveal is that the game will cross over with Horizon Zero Dawn. Aloy will be a playable character exclusively on the PlayStation 4 version of the game. Watch Aloy hunt some monsters in the trailer below:

At Tokyo Game Show 2017, Capcom released a trailer for Monster Hunter World which does a tremendous job of capturing the scope of the game's world as well as some of the unique creatures that inhabit it.

Capcom released three trailers that show off the game's various weapons and combat techniques. From heavy weapons to more precise implements of destruction, World's arsenal looks to take advantage of the game's enhanced engine with by introducing several new ways to take down the game's gigantic foes.

The Monster Hunter franchise may not be quite as big in the Western world as it is in its native land of Japan, but that may change when Monster Hunter World is released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Bloodborne: Fan Adds Hidden Characters Back Into the Game

It's pretty clear that people really, really want a new Bloodborne game.

NewsMatthew Byrd
Jan 16, 2018

Bloodborne fan/developer Lance McDonald has been working on adding some previously cut creations back into From Software's PlayStation 4 masterpiece.

Now, considering that there isn't much information about these creatures available outside of some rough designs found in some tossed aside game code, not all of them feel like natural additions to the Bloodborne experience. Simply put, some of them look downright bad.

However, there are a few enemies that feel like they truly belong in the base game. Besides, even the ones that are awkwardly implemented back into the experience showcase a tremendous amount of effort on McDonald's part.

Many of the creatures he added back to the game were discovered by a YouTuber named Sanadsk who found several unused Bloodborne NPCs, enemies, and bosses that were hidden in the game's code.

Sanadsk collaborated with fellow Bloodborne data miners id-daemon and luxos18 to dive into the game's recently released code structure. As noted in the video, the majority of their discoveries seem to qualify as abandoned concepts that were simply left behind in the remnants of the game's code. For instance, there seems to be an NPC/enemy character that would have been found at the game's university.

One discovery of note is Sanadsk's observation that many of the enemies they found seem to carry a fire-related theme. He speculates that there might have been a fire level in the game at one point that was scrapped during development. That makes sense considering that most Souls games have had such a level at one point during development.

Here are a few shots of some of Sanadsk's discoveries.

Elsewhere, YouTuber Moros Nyx found something in Bloodborne that supports Sanadsk's fire world theory.

In the video above, Nyx details his discovery of an enemy known as the Flaming Undead Giant. The reason that discovery is so significant is because this particular foe hasn't been seen in Bloodborne since 2014 when From Software revealed the game's Chalice Dungeon feature via new footage. When Bloodborne was actually released, fans couldn't help but notice that this enemy was nowhere to be found. Most people assumed that he'd simply been cut alongside a few other creatures featured in the game's early trailers.

So how did this baddie manage to elude being found for so long? To answer that question, you first have to understand that Chalie Dungeons in Bloodborne add a roguelike element to the game. That is to say that certain details of their design change from playthrough to playthrough. It's highly unlikely that two players will have identical Chalice Dungeon runs. The design variance of these runs is so great that some dungeons even include certain boss battles that other players may never find unless they enter a specific code to access that dungeon.

Even still, it's downright odd that nobody else has found this particular enemy up until this point. Nyx - an experienced dungeon crawler - even admits that he finds it likely that someone has encountered this enemy at some point and simply didn't know that they were looking at something very, very rare. An alternate theory suggests that this monster may have been added to the game sometime after its release via a content update.

As exciting as this discovery is for the Bloodborne community, it is nothing compared to the implication this find represents. Could it be true that some previously suspected "cut" content is really hiding in the nearly infinite depths of Bloodborne's dungeons? Have some of those enemies already been found by players that were unaware of their discoveries?

If the answers to these questions aren't enough to convince you to jump back into Bloodborne - or try it for the first time - perhaps our look at how Bloodborne is one of the most effective gothic horror masterpieces of the modern era will do the trick.

Wolverines, skunks, co-op gameplay, and more.

NewsMatthew Byrd
Jan 16, 2018

The latest entry into the Far Cry franchise figures to include all of the mini-missions, base destruction, and open-world exploration that we've come to expect from the game's most recent titles, but this Far Cry breaks the mold just a bit by moving players from a harsh jungle setting to the heart of rural America.

In Far Cry 5, you will be tasked with liberating a small town from the oppression of a cult that has coerced the populace through fear and intimidation. Doing so will require you to seek the help of a small band of local rebels who share your goal.

Here's the latest from Far Cry 5:

Far Cry 5 News

The developers of Far Cry 5 took a little time to break down some of the things you can look forward to in Far Cry 5. While the bulk of the footage focuses on previously revealed features - co-op gameplay, freedom of exploration, recruiting characters - this video does include some never before seen looks at the game's wildlife.

Far Cry 5 Release Date

Far Cry 5 has been delayed to March 27, 2018 from an original release date of Feb. 27. The game is coming for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. PlayStation 4 users will receive a free in-game skin pack upon purchase.

Far Cry 5 Trailer

This Far Cry 5 trailer focuses on the game's co-op options by detailing the many ways you and your friends will be able to destroy the game's small-town cultists. Hint: many of them involve rather large guns.

E3 2017 didn't bring us quite as much information about Far Cry 5 as we thought it might, but these two new trailers for the game do expand upon the game's unique look at the modern world. We also get a brief look at a cinematic mock-up of the title's gameplay which seems to suggest that the latest Far Cry may place a greater emphasis on squad-based objective completion and combat.

Along with Far Cry's first official trailer, Ubisoft is releasing a few character trailers that highlight some of the prominent members of the game's resistance movement. Get to know bar owner Mary May, Pastor Jerome Jeffries, and pilot Nick Rye courtesy of these new previews:

The official trailer for Far Cry 5 seemingly confirms many things we already new about the game. It takes place somewhere in the Montana countryside, it sees you combat a radical religious leader and his congregation, and it will feature plenty of open-world action. It also serves to get us very, very excited about the next installment in the Far Cry series.

Far Cry 5 Story

Far Cry 5 will cast players into the role of a junior deputy in Hope County, Montana. Somewhere along the way, this young deputy will cross paths with the local doomsday religious cult known as Project at Eden's Gate. It seems that it will be up to you to bring together local members of the growing resistance movement and fight back with the help of various vehicles and weapons.

You'll also be able to hire special activist groups in order to help you along the way. It's not entirely clear how these groups will affect the overall gameplay beyond assisting you in combat, but we do know that Far Cry 5 will feature a co-op option and will revive Far Cry 3's map editor program.

Far Cry 5 Details

The latest artwork for Far Cry 5 continues the series recent tradition of enigmatic villains by introducing us to the leader of a Montana cult and his followers.

The imagery here implies that the group has some kind of Christian orientation, but what we do know is that there certainly seems to be some religious aspect to these new villains.

Look beyond the social commentary, however, and you may find that the most interesting thing about this image is that it features what appears to be multiple villains rather than just a lone evil figure. Could it be possible that Ubisoft will implement some kind of lieutenant structure by divvying up their new open world into controlled regions?

Specifics aside, Far Cry 5's design continues to intrigue with its mix of modern ideas and old worlds.
