Michel Ancel and his team at Ubisoft Montpellier have big things in store for the future of the cult-classic franchise.

Ubisoft has confirmed today that Michel Ancel, the creator of Rayman and Beyond Good & Evil at Ubisoft Montpellier, will be leading the development of a “proverbial sequel” to BG&E. A follow-up to the cult 2003 game was first announced back in 2008, with news that development would be headed to next generation consoles in 2011. However, additional information on the project has been pretty scare since then.

At this time though, it is unclear of how closely this proverbial sequel will be related to the original Beyond Good & Evil, and Ubisoft has said that the game is still too early in development to start releasing these critical details. In a statement, Ubisoft clarifies: “while Michel and the team at Ubisoft Montpellier are working with the core tenets of BG&E, they’re developing something that aspires to push past the boundaries of a proverbial sequel and leverages next-gen technologies to deliver a truly surprising, innovative and exceptional game.”

In addition, Michel Ancel is also working on an original indie game with his newly co-founded company, Wild Sheep Studio. We’ll keep you posted on further developments with the proverbial sequel to Beyond Good & Evil as we learn them.
