Kojima shows off a few new ways that you’ll be able to play with your cardboard box next year in The Phantom Pain.
If you’ve been known to dabble in the world of Metal Gear Solid from time to time, then you’re probably aware of the cardboard box stealth mechanic, one of the series’ quirky staples over the years. Well this week at Gamescom 2014, creator Hideo Kojima took the stage to show off the new upgrades to the cardboard box in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
For starters, Snake can now pop out of the box, take out an enemy, and then crouch back down inside it. He can also use the Fulton parachute device from within the box as well. When an enemy has Snake in his sights, Snake can even vacate out the side of the box, and effectively render it as a decoy.
But that’s not even all where the box’s new decoy abilities are concerned. Snake can stand upright in the box, which reveals a painted decoy of a saluting soldier up and down the front. Other pictures can also be placed on the outside of the box, like a scantily-clad model, which can cause an enemy soldier to come running right into Snake’s clutches. There are also a few more undisclosed cardboard box surprises planned for the game as well.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is expected to launch in 2015 on PS4, Xbox One, PS3, Xbox 360, and PC.
