Rockstar's GTA V may be headed for the record books, according to retail sources...

It's being reported by CVG that retail sources are claiming Grand Theft Auto developer, Rockstar, has allocated three million copies of the upcoming Grand Theft Auto V for the UK alone. If this is true, and if it sells as well as Rockstar clearly expects, the sandboxer would strip the sales record from the previous sales record holder, Call of Duty: Black Ops, which managed to sell 1.4 million copies in a single day.

2006's Grand Theft Auto IV managed to shift 630,000 units on its first day which, as CVG switch out, represented a quarter of console owners in the UK at the time (Xbox 360 and PS3). Now that many more people own the consoles, with the seven year gap seeing more units installed in households across the country, GTA V could well hit this lofty goal, especially as records show thirteen million consoles now entertaining the UK populace. This means that GTA V would only need to hit around a fifth of the UK user base to shift the 3 million.

GTA V is due out on September 17 worldwide on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and features a new multi-protagonist story set in and around the city of Los Santos.
