Mojang, the creator of gaming phenomenon, Minecraft, is in the acquisition sights of Microsoft...
In a move that may make the legions of Minecraftfans all over the world shudder with terror, it's being reported that Minecraftcreator, Mojang, has become then next target for Microsoft's purchasing department.
According to the Wall Street Journal, who has information from “a person with knowledge of the matter”, Microsoft is looking to buy Mojang in a deal worth more than $2 billion. The company is so keen to own the Swedish developer that its currently trying to fast-track the deal, aiming to sign before the end of this week.
That's about all we know about the deal at the moment, and at the time of writing, neither Microsoft nor Mojang have made any official statements.
With Minecraftbeing such a beloved title, there'll no doubt be all sorts of concerns over this deal, and long-time fans of the game will almost certainly view the purchase as a bad thing. Microsoft could bring some radical changes to the Minecraftbusiness model, but there's no denying that the Xbox has also helped make the game as successful as it is.
It has to be asked, if Microsoft does succeed in the purchase, what will this mean for the PlayStation incarnation of Minecraft? Will Microsoft attempt to force an exclusive sometime down the line?
The next few days should yield more information about the possible deal.
