In celebration of Halloween, we’re counting down the days with some of the greatest horror games ever made -- 31 of our favorites! Every day, we’ll take a look back at a horror game that gave us goosebumps, made our controllers tremble, and chased us out of our living rooms. Long live the horror game! If there's one HD remake I'd like to see in the horror game genre, it's definitely the original Parasite Eve. This might be an unpopular opinion to have, but Parasite Eve is Square Enix's best franchise (although, at the time they were just known as Square). The opening scene is absolutely one of the most terrifying setups for a story that I've ever seen, as the lead character, NYPD rookie Aya Brea, visits an opera in Manhattan's Carnegie Hall on Christmas Eve when all hell breaks loose.
And by all hell breaks loose, I mean everyone in the building explodes into a heap of fire and blood, except Aya and the opera singer on stage, Melissa Pearce. Melissa gets all scientific on Aya -- talking about mitochondria and whatnot -- and then turns into a flying bee-like mutated beast. Then, one of the most badass games on the PS One begins as you're sent around iconic parts of New York, like the Museum of Natural History, the Chrysler Building, the Statue of Liberty, and Central Park to unravel the story, fighting horrifying mutations along the way as spooky, ethereal music plays in the background.
Rats that mutate into huge, bloody images of themselves, a weird river of melted flesh, an inflamed horse pulling Aya in a carriage, and a terrifying three-headed dogs are just some of the petrifying cutscenes you'll find in Parasite Eve.
All of these elements made Parasite Eve not only one of the best horror games around, but it had one of the best cinematic presentations of the PS One era. Forget about Final Fantasy 385 or whatever number they're actually on, give me a Parasite Eve for new-gen consoles.
