Remember THQ? Sigh...The company had quite a few great titles under its belt, but none of them were as horrifying as S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl.
In this FPS, the player takes on the role of a "Stalker," someone hunting artifacts from "The Zone." The Zone takes players into an alternate reality where a second radiation explosion occurred 20 years later at the Chernobyl Power Plant, creating severely mutated forms of life in the surrounding area.
Players will come across mutations of all sorts in The Zone, including mutated humans, dogs, boars, and even crows. Have you ever seen a mutated crow? It's fucking terrifying. The game kept it simple with its enemy design, creating monsters that were a direct result of the second radiation leak. It's an interesting little twist on the zombie enemy, which seems to be the only kind of monster in horror games that used to be a normal being once.
The game also had a winning RPG formula: less talking and more gaming. Keeping the conversation's short and succinct made it a much more enjoyable RPG experience than if it were filled with long-winded yapping.
Shadow of Chernobyl captured the post apocalyptic setting wonderfully at the time, creating feelings of desolation and uneasiness. It still remains in the top 5 for scariest pc games of all time.
