Killing Floor is a gory, monster-filled horde experience you won't soon forget. And it's today's horror game of the day!

In celebration of Halloween, we’re counting down the days with some of the greatest horror games ever made -- 31 of our favorites! Every day, we’ll take a look back at a horror game that gave us goosebumps, made our controllers tremble, and chased us out of our living rooms. Long live the horror game! And make sure to check out our full list of 31 Great Horror Games To Play In October!

While not technically the scary, bone-chilling kind of game we've been selecting throughout the series, there is no doubt that things can get very tense very quickly in Tripwire Interactive's Killing Floor. With a horde mode full of disgusting monsters, mass dismemberment, and limited supplies, this multiplayer game is as survival horror as they come.

Originally a mod for Unreal Tournament 2004, the game became so popular that it received its own standalone release in 2009. For five years, Killing Floor has gathered players from all over the world to complete one simple objective: survive 10 waves of monsters and defeat the vicious boss monster. And it doesn't become redundant at all. Every session plays out very differently. There are tons of classes, weapons, and power-ups that you can make up your own experience every single time you sit down to play. One match you might want to play as a medic and the other you're that support unit riddling the horde with bullets. Or maybe you want to hang back as the sharpshooter.

Killing Floor was Evolve before Evolve was a thing. The team-based multiplayer shooters has already seen one of its highest points in Killing Floor

As far as how the monsters came to be, Killing Floor's story is a lighter fare -- just the right amount of "government messes around with genetics and ignites the apocalypse" to please the most hardcore gamer. But really, who cares? The best monster/zombie stuff seems to never explain an origin for the epidemic. The monsters in this game are fantastic and a lot of fun to dismember. You can shoot limbs off with machine guns or bring out the katana. Really, it's your choice how you want to play it.

I spent a lot of time playing this game in college and still jump on to a server every once in a while. Sure, the game shows it's age a little nowadays, but that shouldn't stop you. On highest graphics, the game still looks pretty damn good. But if you're a snob and think it's just to late to jump in now, Tripwire is hard at work on a sequel, which I got to see at NYCC a few weeks back. I'll have a preview of that up soon.

For now, start slaughtering some monsters!
