Silent Hill 2 is a tale of suffering and cruelty like the gaming world has never known. Perhaps not until the excellent Outlasthave we seen lives burn so wildly. The bully, the victim, the lost wife, and the murderer -- all the most savage when caught in Silent Hill's thick web of darkness.
Team Silent's first game was inspired, but it's really its sequel that really hammered this series into survival horror canon. It's out there, deranged, and exactly what the Devil ordered. The town burns around the players of Silent Hill 2, and it isn't until the very end of the game, that we understand exactly why they've come together -- like pieces of a final apocalyptic puzzle.
I think this game might also be one of the first examples of an unreliable narrator in a horror game. It becomes clear that James Sunderland, the man looking for his deceased wife in the infamous town, has more of a hand in the disturbing events of the game than he originally lets on.
This game plays with perception, memory, and your own filter for what's morally acceptable. By the end of this game, you might feel a little sick, a bit disturbed. Without a doubt, it'll be an experience you'll never forget.
One a lighter note, this game featured the first appearance of Pyramid Head, and what an intro it is. He gets especially sick with the nurses at one point in the game. Beware.
