CD Projekt RED is taking a stance on the growing greed of DLC, by making it all free...

Let's face it, no one likes paid for DLC, at least the cost of it, and the fact that more often than not, it appears as though said DLC is simply hived off content that should have been in the retail release. It's now an unavoidable, but undeniably ugly trend for publishers to release all sorts of DLC, even before a game has been released, and in some instances this DLC is something that's already on the disc, with users paying more money for an unlock code to access the content already on the disc they've bought.

What started out as an interesting idea has spiralled out of all control, to the point that it's almost become acceptable by many, even if the missing content robs the main game of much needed gameplay and story.

Of course, it's not acceptable, and although I'd heartily support good value, decent DLC that is actually extra content, such as GTA IV's Lost and Damnedand Ballad Of Gay Tony, and The Elder Scrolls' large-scale DLCs, I cannot do the same for the nasty practice of charging £15 for a couple of maps, or a few colour changes of costume. And, let's not even get started on season passes. Urgh.

Thankfully, not all developers and publishers are the same, and one is CD Projekt RED, who has taken a stand against such blatant customer loyalty exploitation. Ahead of The Witcher 3's release next year, it's been announced that the game will be endowed with 16 DLC packs, ranging from new costumes and armour, to whole side missions. All you have to do is buy the game, and you'll be able to grab all of the content at no extra cost. This content is available on all platforms.

CD Projekt RED believes that paid for DLC should be reserved for large, expansion-type content, and that smaller scale additions shouldn't force the player to part with even more money, and I, for one, applaud it on this. It's one thing to pay for an entire new story, but quite another to have to shell out cash for a simple bit of armour.
