The makers of Remember Me return with the episodic adventure game Life Is Strange. Here's the first reveal trailer...

Last year's Remember Me had its share of flaws, but there was also much to enjoy in it: a beautifully-designed future Paris, and an engaging SF premise where a new-fangled device can manipulate and erase memories.

Next year, French developer Dontnod Entertainment will return with Life Is Strange, an episodic third-person adventure game with its own intriguing story. It takes place in a small town in Oregon, where two high school friends, Max and Chloe, are trying to discover the whereabouts of a fellow student who's mysteriously disappeared.

The twist is that Max isn't just any other high school student: she has the ability to rewind time, Braidstyle. Those who've had a hands-on preview of Life Is Strange have described it as being a bit like Telltale's The Walking Dead series with added time travel, which already sounds interesting enough to us.

What's really caught our attention, though, is the reveal trailer below. What it points to is a thoughtful high school drama with a few genre flourishes, like an interactive Donnie Darko. The visuals are interesting, too: Dontnod has used hand-painted textures on its character models to give a more delicate, dreamlike tone. This, contrasted with the evident darkness waiting in the story, creates an uneasy atmosphere.

Take a look:

Life Is Strange will be released in five parts, with the first episode scheduled for the early part of 2015. If you want to see the game in action, here's another video, which shows Life Is Strange in action, and also includes a bit of commentary from creative director Jean-Maxime Moris.

There's a definite hint of David Cage's Heavy Rain in there, which is certainly no bad thing.

Life Is Strange episode one will be available to download on the 30th January for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
