The ground breaking sci-fi RTS, Homeworld, is returning to our screens soon, and here's what it'll look like...
TrailerYou'd be forgiven for thinking the RTS (Real Time Strategy) genre is littered with nothing but paint-by-numbers clones of past classics, such as Age of Empires, Dune II, Command & Conquer, and so on. This may be a bit of an exaggeration, and there have been some great RTS titles released in recent years, but there's a distinct feeling of similarity nonetheless, with the same formula used time after time. There was one RTS that did away with the rule book, however, and that's the classic RTS, Homeworld.
When most RTS games utilised the same, isometric, top-down approach, some with 3D camera to view the battlefield, Homeworldbroke the mold, with a full 360 degree play field. As it was set in the vast reaches of space, combat wasn't simply on a two dimensional level, but took place in a full 360 degree range, with ships able to move in any direction, and combat taking on a whole new tactical approach. Sierra and Relic's game was an instant classic, but after a sequel, it faded from view, until now.
Gearbox Software, of Borderlandsfame, is set to re-release the game, this time in HD remastered form, bringing the unique RTS to a new generation of gamers. Homeworld Remasteredis due for release for PC on February 25. Pre-orders are now available on Steam, and the game is priced at $34.99, with a 15% pre-order discount taking the price down to £29.74.
The package includes remastered editions of both Homeworldand Homeworld 2, along with their original versions for those who like retro RTS action. Players will also receive free access to the Homeworld RemasteredSteam Multiplayer Beta.
Alongside the re-release of the game, Gearbox is also developing a new entry into the series called Homeworld Shipbreakers. This will be a prequel to the original games, with more details to be announced at a later date.
