Sony's online gaming division has a new owner, and has been renamed Daybreak Game Company...

News

SOE, or Sony Entertainment Entertainment, has been sold to a new owner, and has promptly been renamed and turned into a multi-platform endeavour. The new name for the company is Daybreak Game Company, and the new owner, investment firm Columbus Nova, and Daybreak have outlined plans for the future, with a statement on the official SOE site.

"Today, we are pleased to announce that we have been acquired by Columbus Nova, an investment management firm well known for its success with its existing portfolio of technology, media and entertainment focused companies. This means that effective immediately SOE will operate as an independent game development studio where we will continue to focus on creating exceptional online games for players around the world, and now as a multi-platform gaming company. Yes, that means PlayStation and Xbox, mobile and more!"

It's a surprising development for many, and already the move is being debated online, with some certain that this will be a benefit, and others who are not so optimistic. There are already fears that SOE's titles could be broken up and sold off, and staff let go, whilst others are excited about previously Sony-only titles making the jump to competing platforms like the Xbox (such as Planetside, and new zombie title, H1Z1).

It's true that investment firms rarely care about quality and innovation, as investors are always looking for a healthy bottom line, so it remains to be seen just how SOE's sale will urn out for both staff and gamers. Let's hope it's good for all.
