Sega's spiky mascot's heading to mobile phones with the free-to-play Sonic Runners. First details and screenshot here...

News

Last week, we learned of the sad news that Sega is to downsize as it shifts its attention from consoles to mobile and PC gaming. The announcement for Sonic Runners could be a glimpse of what it has in mind for the future.

According to an issue of Japanese magazine Famitsu - as translated by the good people at Polygon - Sonic Runners is a side-scrolling action game with short stages and simple controls: taking its inspiration from infinite runners like Canabalt, Sonic will run through a series of 2D stages, and you simply have to tap the screen to make him jump.

Sonic Runners will be a free-to-play game for mobile, and will be "supported by premium item purchases" according to Polygon's translation of Sega's teaser site.

Weirdly, the teaser trailer below doesn't show a single frame of footage from the game itself - instead, we'll have to make do with this lonely screenshot from Famitsu

Although Sonic's appeared on mobile before, this will be his first outing since last year's dismally-received Sonic Boomfor the Wii U. With Sega apparently moving away from the console market, could Sonic's future be in free-to-download games like Sonic Runners?

Sonic Runners is out in the spring in Japan.
