Toejam and Earl, the jammin' alien duo, are back via a new Kickstarter campaign...

Toejam & Earl, the classic series that previously graced the Sega Mega Drive and Microsoft Xbox is set to return, as a new Kickstarter campaign has been launched by the original game's designer and co-creator, Greg 'Ziquat' Johnson.

The project, called Toejam & Earl: Back in the Groove, will be a back to basics approach, one that Greg and his team always wanted to make after the first game, but were unable to do so due to publisher interference, hence the different, but still good sidescrolling second game, and that awful third Xbox title.

“Don't worry we won't make you sick and confused with an over-the-shoulder POV camera like we had in game 3,” says the Kickstarter page. See, no one liked the third game, not even the developer.

The new game will feature the same classic gameplay of the original outing, albeit with updated 3D environments (with a fixed isometric camera), and 90s comic-style, paper cut-out characters, similar to Greg's other recent title, Doki Doki Universe. In fact, visually, it looks very similar to survival game, Don't Starve.

Like the first game, it'll feature co-op play, and will have randomly generated levels, only this time there'll be varied heights, not just flat layouts, night and day effects, and the co-op play will support online functionality for up to four players, complete with real time chat between the protagonists. And yes, split screen will still be present. Hurrah!

The game is being developed for PC initially, but may appear on other platforms depending on funding, and deals with platform owners.

At the time of writing, the game has hit $61,113 of its $400,000 goal, with 29 days to go, and you can see more at the Kickstarter page (link below). Here's the pledge video, and the animated short for the new-look TJ&E.
