This April, NetherRealm Studios will be releasing a card-based fighter to tie into the long-awaited console release. Check out the trailer!

Trailer

One of NetherRealm Studios’ bread and butter concepts these days is the card-based fighting game hybrid for mobile devices. Their popular trend of freemium games started a few years ago when they released a mobile version of Injustice: Gods Among Us to tie into the console version and just a few months ago they gave us WWE Immortals, where Kane is a naked rock monster. Now they’re doing the same thing for Mortal Kombat X. Much like the main console version, it’ll be released next month.

You can check out the trailer riiiiight abooooooouuuuut... here.

The mobile version’s gameplay is more of a simplistic take on fighting games, using taps and swipes with an incredibly limited moveset. Characters build up meter to do three levels worth of special attacks with the level three being a completely crazy cinematic. The game is also team-based with tagging and through playing, you rack up stats to make your team capable of standing up to the increasingly tough opponents.

This will be a bit closer to the Injusticetie-in than WWE Immortals due to having an actual console game to play off of. Injusticeallowed you to earn special costumes for the fighting game, such as Batman Beyond and Superman in a prison uniform. Mortal Kombat X looks to be going down the same route. Injusticealso had a couple characters exclusive to the mobile verison – namely Darkseid and Static – so we’ll see if the same thing happens for Mortal Kombat X.

The trailer does show one major difference, though. Unlike Injusticeand Immortals, Mortal Kombat X will feature Fatalities. So far, confirmed playable characters include Scorpion, Ermac, Reptile, Raiden, and Sub-Zero.

Mortal Kombat X will be available for iPad, iPhone, iPod touch and Android devices.
