Disney Infinity is set to be joined by Playmation, a new toy-videogame mash-up...
NewsFollowing the success of Activision's Skylanders, we've seen Disney get in on the act with Disney Infinity, its own mix of action figures, microchips, and expandable action game. Then there's Lego Dimensions, Pokemon Rumble, and the aforementioned Amiibo, the latter of which are now so collectible that a cut-throat grey market has sprung up around certain rare figures (you will be mine, Meta Knight).
Into this lively landscape, Disney's preparing to introduce Playmation, which looks a bit strange if we're being honest. From what we understand, it's a combination of action figures, a videogame app, and some sort of wearable device which looks a bit like that glove Nintendo came up with in the 1980s.
The first set will be based on Marvel's Iron Man, which means the wearable gauntlet-type thing (or "high-tech repulsor gear") looks like something Tony Stark might have hammered together.
"You will go through familiar gameplay experiences of leveling up, earning points and completing missions," Disney says. "There is a companion app, but Playmation is not meant to be played in front of a screen. Instead, you become part of the story in real life, running around and using your imagination to complete missions and go on exciting adventures."
In other words, it's some sort of Augmented Reality game that doesn't appear to require a separate console. The Iron Man-themed Playmation is due out later this year in the US, with Star Wars and Frozen-themed sets scheduled for later this year.
