In a bit of great news, Game Informer revealed that Microsoft will give away all of its Halo 5 DLC maps for free!

News

Game Informer is revealing news details about Halo 5: Guardianslittle by little leading up to their July cover story. Yesterday, the magazine revealed that Halo 5 would introduce squadmates for both Master Chief and Agent Locke.

Here's the latest: Microsoft will give away more than 15 DLC multiplayer maps for free by June 2016. The game arrives in Oct. 27 and will get several map packs in the next year as is the usual for a Halogame.

"When you have paid map packs and content, you divide the player base into two groups: the haves and have-nots," studio head Josh Holmes told Game Informer. "The people that have the map pack can play together but the people who don't cannot. That to us is a real problem. So we're delivering all the maps to all players free so everybody will be able to play together. That, we feel, is really important to having a great multiplayer ecosystem."

This is really good news, especially if you love Halomultiplayer, but don't have the cash to buy multiple map packs.

In other news, while 343 Industries is stripping Halo 5 of split-screen local co-op, you'll at least be able to play online co-op without an Xbox Live Gold account. Still a bit disappointing, though, isn't it?

343 studio head Josh Holmes clarified in a blog post that players WILL need an Xbox Live Gold subscription in order to play online co-op:

I need take a moment to make an important correction on something we miscommunicated in the story. I misspoke during the interview when stating that online co-op campaign would be supported with an Xbox Live Silver account. Co-op campaign will require Xbox Live Gold to play. I want to extend my sincere apologies to our fans, and to Game Informer, for this error and any confusion it has caused.

In other news, design director Kevin Franklin also teased E3 a bit, specificall a "new epic multiplayer experience" that 343 is excited about. "I can't say too much about it, but I can tell you it does incorporate all aspects of the Halo sandbox for the very first time ever," he said. "This was always a dream of ours and all of our fans to build something like this. It's been three years of long development and an incredible amount of play testing. We can't wait to show it off."

You'll hear a lot more about Halo 5: Guardiansnext week at E3. Get ready!
