Xbox One Vs PS4: has the battle turned around?

Has Microsoft managed to turn the tide with the changes to the Xbox One, or is Sony still in the driving seat?

As one of the biggest fallouts in gaming history, the Xbox One's debut to the world could have gone better, no one could deny that. The launch of the console was marred by vague specifications and features, little in the way of gaming news and an unwelcome (by many) focus on TV and non-gaming abilities. E3 then arrived, and the whole thing exploded in a calamity of questionable policies and customer hate. It wasn't good.

A short time later, Microsoft boldly decided to embrace the feedback, and one of the industry's biggest turnarounds was set in motion. The policies on used games were relaxed, online connectivity was no longer an issue and the system will now work without Kinect. These changes effectively righted all the wrongs people had with the console, and for those not too pleased with the focus on multimedia over games, even that has been addressed with strong game showings at both E3 and Gamescom.

The Xbox One is now a much more attractive system to the consumer, and even the price difference between it and the PS4 has been addressed. European gamers will now get a totally free digital copy of FIFA 14 with the unit, and there's even the possibility of further free games being offered in different bundles. This all contributes to one thing – the Xbox One is closing ground on the PlayStation 4. In fact, it could be argued that Sony is actually now on the flip side.

Sonys Andrew House's ill-received comments at Gamescom about Microsoft's policy changes aside, the PlayStation 4 became the champion of gamers because of the polar opposite approach the unit took to the original Xbox One specification. It offered everything the Xbox One didn't, and won the hearts and minds of potential customers. Now it has no such advantage, and it's all about the actual strengths and features of the consoles.

Now that the Xbox One no longer has these short comings, and owning a PS4 isn't as clearly advantageous, have people forgotten the initial furore? In part, yes, I'd argue.

In truth, it was always going to happen. Today's major bugbear is usually nothing more than tomorrow's forgotten niggle, and even without the policy reversal the Xbox One would have eventually started to sell more and more as big name exclusives emerged. FIFA 14's bundling alone would have caused many to forgive and forget. Now that we've got the best of both worlds, thanks to Microsoft doing the right thing, which should be applauded and not continually criticised (as Sony's Mr House did), there's little to separate the competition. Yes, the PS4 is supposedly the more powerful unit, but the actual results of this added power are yet to be seen.

Customer consciousness has definitely been altered, and although I doubt the Xbox One's changes will persuade those now solidly invested in the PS4, those who were unsure, or possibly leaning towards the PS4 may now think again. In fact, UK retailer, Game, recently announced it's no longer accepting pre-orders for the Xbox One Day One Edition, as that version of the unit has sold out. Game has also stated that pre-orders for the standard edition cannot be guaranteed for launch. Clearly, plenty of people are interested.

Good Game, Good Game

One thing that can always separate the units is the launch line up and other upcoming exclusives, and it's here where the Xbox has also won back many of the critics. Excluding third party titles which will arrive on both machines, the Xbox One arguably has the stronger line up of the two. Microsoft's line up includes big hitters like Dead Rising 3Forza 5Ryse: Son of RomeTitanfall, Project SparkQuantum Break and, of course, Halo 5. Then there's the FIFA 14 deal, the importance of which simply can't be understated.

The PS4, on the other hand, has titles such as The Order: 1886Drive ClubKillzone: ShadowfallInfamous: Second Son and Knack. It has some exclusives like a special GTA V bundle and extra content for Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, but the Xbox does seem to have the edge in exclusives at the moment, but as always, this is as subjective as you can get.

That said, this judgment is also based on current, confirmed exclusives, and this could change at any time when new announcements come, but at this time, Microsoft is certainly eyeing up that driving seat once more.

Still, Microsoft's exclusives have petered off a little in the later years of the Xbox 360, and once strong showings have weakened with time, such as the once loud and proud Gears Of War which has been tarnished in the eyes of many by the mediocre Gears Of War: judgment. The PS3, however, enjoyed a growth in strong exclusives, including such titles as Uncharted and The Last Of Us. If this trend continues, Sony could capitalise, and if both consoles truly are equal technically, exclusives will be key.

Breeding Excellence

With all of the policy changes and a strong line up of games for both machines, it's now a much more level playing field, and as long as the general focus shifts from what Microsoft did wrong to what its doing now, the next generation could be a true breeding ground of excellence with two powerful consoles that can match each other pound for pound. After all, industry legend and programming savant, John Carmack, has publicly stated how similar both systems are, and so we should no longer see inferior PS3 ports of titles, and instead such versions will highlight the strengths of each machine.

This only further emphasises the importance of exclusives and that of the online services. In the past, Xbox Live has always been the clear winner due to a stronger infrastructure and more robust servers. Now that the PS4's PSN is subscription-based, this may well change, and it could become just as functional as Microsoft's online service. Add to this the indie-friendly nature of both consoles, and even the indie market has become more balanced, and we may see less in the way of exclusives here too. The playing field has, potentially, never been so level.

Which Side?

So, there's no doubting that Microsoft has gone all-out to rescue the Xbox One, and the numerous changes, big name titles and bundles have certainly made for a much more interesting duel between the two next gen units. There's still some way to go, but both machines now look set for a strong launch. Feel free to leave your comments on the state of play below...

PS4 is more powerful, no history of anti-consumer policies, and game focused from day 1. Its more powerful. Its cheaper. Seems like a no brainer to me.

To me kinect is gimmicky and I don't really want to pay for something I don't want in the first place. Even with microsoft bundling a game with the Xbone its still cheaper to by a PS4 and game. Sony still has my vote.

So true. if it was this easy for x box to change all their policys why did they even have them in the first place? and who says they cant just switch them back in 2014

The PS3 was more powerful than the Xbox 360 by a whole 200 Teraflops, but I noticed no real difference in gaming performance when playing both consoles. The clear choice of purchase is games, and to be Microsoft has the better lineup. Power in a console usually links to graphical capabilities, and multi-platform games will look the same on both consoles since developers have an easier load optimizing graphics that are ubiquitous to both machines. The only real difference in graphics that'll be noticeable is exclusives. If you enjoy Killzone or have more interest in the order, then I wish you the best experience for your money.

PS4 actually has 5 more exclusive titles announced than Xbox One, not to mention the other unnanounced titles its 13 1st party studios are working on, games like uncharted, not Project Spark. Only enticing games for Xbox listed above are Titanfall and Halo 5, just because you have exclusives doesn't mean they are gonna sell your console, they actually have to be good. Not to mention the PS4 is cheaper, more powerful and Sony in general is far more gamer friendly than Microsoft.

Halo 5 is just going to be another CoD rip off. Microsoft lacks creativity and vision. The Playstation 4 is proactive where as the XboxOne is reactive much like microsoft's vision. Creativity always wins.

"Microsoft boldly decided to embrace the feedback", They didn't do it for you, they did it to save their own skin. Or else they wouldn't have changed it regardless of whether the consumer liked it or not. The reason the PS4 is a better system (to me) is because Sony took a gamer friendly approach...it was designed for gamers where as microsoft just wants to add a whole bunch of random stuff to make the system look more advanced and "useful". Personally, the 3 friends of mine who had a 360 never even touched the kinect. Yes it's cool but thats about it. Microsoft is falling behind and becoming lazy, even if the xbox one ends up on top, it will be by a very very small, almost insignificant difference. Sony has clearly done much more this time around than last generation to please the fans which is a big plus in my book. Oh and the exclusives? Only 3 games were a big advantage the xbox had over the playstation, Halo, Gear of war and The witcher. Well this is what i mean by falling behind...343 studio turned halo into garbage with Halo 4 so that's no longer a "threat" to Sony. The witcher is now coming out for PS4 and of course i must mention Titanfall. It looks great but it all seems to point to a timed exclusive which means that sooner or later they will make it for the PS4. Gears of war is the only real advantage microsoft has now...but after the last one it seems the franchise is going down more than up. Where as Sony have been making exclusives that have clearly been going in the right direction like uncharted and the last of us..hell even Killzone is improving...slightly but still improving. Overall....as i said before even if microsoft ends up "winning", they are slowly declining while Sony is progressing. So i will be getting the PS4, no second thoughts...oh yes and i must address this since someone is going to call me out on it...yes xbox has better online, but sony has improved the online on the ps4 and is much better than the ps3, even if it's not as good as the xbox, it will be an improvement from the ps3, so i can live with that.

Sony was the first to try to implement DMR codes with the PS3 until Gamestop refused to sell their system if they did. Both Sony and Microsoft have been trying to do that for a long time. Do your research, kiddo.

I'm sorry, but Microsoft changing everything back just looks so unprofessional to me. Sony has stayed strong to their main goals from the beginning. Even with Microsoft reverting everything back, I still don't see how the Xbone is in any way better than the PS4.

How about you learn how to read. This article, this comment, and everyone in here is talking about next gen, not last gen idiot. He said the PS4 HAS NO HISTORY OF ANTI-CONSUMER POLICIES...not the PS3.

People need a brain these days.

Resogun comes free with the PS4 along with an extended demo of DriveClub and an extremely discounted price to upgrade to full price. You also get free PS Plus for 14 days.

Not to mention there are plenty of pictures online of the Titanfall devs using a PS4 dev kit and controller...gee I wonder what they're doing..common sense.

...timed exclusive.

It's quit a bit more than 200 Teraflops..and power doesn't necessarily gear towards graphics. The PS4 will bea lot faster and smoother with uploading, downloading, and multi tasking..That's the biggest thing people are overlooking and just saying 'pshh the difference isn't anything and barely noticeable in graphics'...

They saw preorder numbers and got scared..

So they 'rescued' it. The fact remains that at a whim M$ will revert back to the very same policies that gave the X1 horrid reception from consumers. Its not a question of if, it is a question of when

There are sure to be some very good games unveiled at Tokyo Game Show by Sony. Im still very hopeful of a Demons Souls 2 announcement.

Yep, the point that PS4 is 50% stronger than Xbox one is enough for me to ignore the Microsoft console

Xbox One Is Better . Ps4 is cheaper ? Really ?! Cause you can't afford Xbox One ? Please . Don't Talk Trash About a Console unless you know for sure It's bad . hold my Dick !

You sir...are an idiot

PS4 with a GTAV bundle? you are an idiot sir

Xbox may have changed their policies, but the reason they had them was supposed to be their strength. They were going to do all these great new things. I guess all the great new things were not that great after all.

Who wants to stand up and jump around when playing games? Children, that's about it.

In general, I'd agree that there were basically little performance differences this gen, but games like Uncharted and The Last of Us made the graphical difference blatantly obvious. Who has the better launch line-up is debatable, I'd say the PS4 is stronger, but that depends on what games you like. However, I don't buy a system for launch titles. And the PS4 will have far more exclusive titles that I want like GoW and Uncharted 4.

As a 360 owner, I was ready to switch to the PS4 after all the hullabaloo. I liked the idea of PS3 games eventually becoming available for download so I could catch up on exclusives I missed like Last of Us. Now I'm back to sticking with Xbox. I feel invested in the Xbox Live environment, I love Dead Rising and Forza, and the price difference isn't very significant once you add the Eye peripheral to the PS4, which I would. Here's hoping they throw a free game in the pot for us here in the US.

True. My children love it.

Just for clarification; how was the price difference addressed? By bundling with this one game (that I have no interest in?). Because, if so, the price difference is not addressed.

Xbox One for me.

See you on xbl king slayer

Why are people complaining saying that Microsoft is charging way to much? Did you guys forget that PS3 was released at $600?...

They add two free games. You get PS+ and you get Driveclub and Resogun day 1 for free, even if you get it a month afterward both games will still be free.

It is clear the changes(Not Reversals as that would require it to no longer do something in the end which is not the case EXP. It was going to be only digital but now it will play physical games too.) adding the additional perks if you will, no online daily(24HR) check-up required for digital certs, no requirement for use of the kinect to use the console and allowing physical games have swayed some but the real point is none of those things. It's that the PSN is weak and that is being nice. Its more like a bust and moving forward online play is more important than ever. For PS to not have this MAJOR MAJOR factor covered prior to the launch of the PS4 leaves it just as dead with its overly superior specifications as the PS3 when it comes to online play. Not to mention PS's obsession with a PURE GAMING console is akin to a PURE FORWARD DRIVING CAR!!!! Not to mention don't we all have pure gaming consoles.....yah my first was was an Atari!!! X-One may not have my money at launch but they are surely further along in the process of getting my money first over Sony's inability to do no more than the opposite of MS and hope the masses don't ask, "What have you Sony, done to innovate my game console experience lately" and find crickets chirping in the dark of night waiting for something good to come of it. If Sony wants any chance to win this round, show us a PSN that is comparable to XB-Live and we will all be sitting pretty.

I can't forgive Microsoft for attempting to strong arm the gaming community. And while I agree that ps4 needs stiff competition to most effectively improve the gaming experience, I'd consider the wi u before the xb1. I know xbox is gonna have some killer exclusives but I'm willing to stick to my principals in order to preserve consumer options. I will not support Microsofts take it and like it self righteousness. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.

X-One comes with more(Free Digital Game, 1080P capable Kinect, Online Service that works and does not hinder your game play, etc...) therefore the price difference is addressed. As you mentioned those things may not be a factor and if that is the case your (rhetorical?)question is moot according to your own words. Don't be shy and buy a PS4 if a PURE Gaming consoles is what you've been looking for. Or buy a PS3 I guess because that also is a PURE gaming console and well I guess so is the PS2...and well hell so is PS1 .....and the Xbox....and the Xbox 360 but you may be in trouble there because they online capabilities allows you stream movies and TV and that may not be HARDCORE PURE GAMER enough for you but worth looking into.

PS: I am aware of the PSN's abilities to stream video as well, it is just not very PURE HARDCORE GAMER so I didn't think it was a factor.

I think that is a spot on opinion for the average gamer and rightly so the X-Live environment is key. It gives us what we all want when we buy a console........ a good time !!!

It still does the same things mentioned at E3 plus the additional perks as you mentioned are an addition not removal of options. It does appear these things are going to be great, but lets see if Sony picks up the pace and gives us more than fluffed up spec's. Proofs in the pudding and after PS3 and its superiors specs I am going to wait to see what this thing does in the real world not in SonyLand where we should trust Sony to delivery just like last time. Hows that PSN going ............or is it not. Cry wolf much, Sony?

When is NOW as it does the same things mentioned @ E3 in addition to the added perks so stop questioning and just go reserve a PS4 eH!!!!!

" Not to mention PS's obsession with a PURE GAMING console is akin to a PURE FORWARD DRIVING CAR!!!!" I'm sorry are we not buying a gaming console? Why do i want other useless things...and as for the online..the PS4 is not as good as the xbox but its way better than the ps3 in case you haven't seen it. Stop trying to cover Microsofts greediness and mistakes. Sony fans aren't complaining about the ps4 while a lot of micrsoft complained about the xbox one until they changed the policies. If the xbox ends up being number one again...it will be by an insignificant difference...why? because microsoft is not moving forward...its slowly declining while Sony is improving. Agreed...PSN wont be as good as live but the gap will be much much smaller.

The PS4 "is more powerful" sounds like a bunch of Sony Fanboy talk to me. How so? Prove it. Design a Game that CAN ONLY run on the PS4 vs the X1... In fact, let me throw this your way. John Carmack said that the PS4 and X1 were similar hardware.
Now what about the 300,000 Azure Cloud Servers? MS has SOO MUCH MORE processing power to offer developers. I'd say that the PS4 is nothing more than a PS3 with more RAM :-p Atleast the X1 tried to be a True Next Gen console with Cloud Servers and Added Kinect Functionality

You are clearly sorry indeed Alex. So your saying the X-One does not play games ????? Yah, your point falls short and if you don't think I am well aware of the countless attempts for Sony's PSN to achieve that success of X-Live you are correct and that's because they have not done anything. Microsofts only 'mistake' is not sticking to the DRM and going completely digital and adding the physical ability is far from greedy as it is just what the public asked for and they gave it. Sony fans are not saying anything unless it is a dig towards MS, things like greedy yet Sony's been 'greedy' for far longer than MS's Xbox so that also makes little or no sense. The reason no one is out there saying anything about PS4 is easy, nothing GOOD to say about PS4 other than it plays games ie PURE GAMING CONSOLE!!!!!! I'm not impressed and for you to state a PURE GAMING CONSOLE is moving forward only shows you take serious medication due to an inability to ascertain reality versus your make believe PS world that exists in fanboi's heads that Sony is your friend...hate to bust your bubble but BOTH of these companies are in the same business and that is taking money from gamers, period. Take that sony teet out of your mouth and open you eyes. The only console with the future of gaming at heart this round so far is MS. That is why it will play games just the same & on the same level as PS4 plus a boat load of additional things due to the FACT that 2/3's of those that own current gen consoles use it for MORE THAN PURE GAMING.....sorry kid nothing new here for me to see I just want to state facts. In the end I will own both like every other console since the late 70's & early 80's I still own. Be honest to yourself and learn one thing quick, companies are not your friend, they want our money. Telling me PSN is closing a gap on MS is like me telling you that Miley Cyrus is closing in on Rihanna in popularity where twerking is concerned.......see how silly a statement like that sounds. Sony is done without viable online gameplay and the consoles launches in 2 months and we should take your word, Alex that PSN will be 'better' hmmmmm I'm going off my years of experience and so far Sony is well behind and don't take my word for it check the stats. X-Box Live VS. PSN......WHO WINS???? That is who will lead the next gen unless PSN turns water to wine and you PS fanboi's keep telling us. I want a factual source but guessing that is not an option when it comes to things that don't exist and in this case that is a solid well run PSN that is here for all to use and trumps X-Live.

agreed.

To each their own, but I can't wait to get my release date PS4 bundle from Amazon! :)

Talk about a bias article...

Let's all get this straight. PS also has a free digital game Drive Club and Free to play games, online services that don't hinder my game play, a camera that is not forced on you(if I wanted a kinect I would buy one. I did try the kinect and move from last gen and really both failed). The PS4 and XB1 are looking so alike now that I saw what ever console you want to buy go ahead. It's up to each gamer and really who cares who wins the console war. Game on forever.

Really? how much can that possibly help when most DL speeds in the US average between 10-30 mbit? Kinect would be a waste of time for me. I'm old school. Give me a gamepad.

I am buying a PS4, but its solely because I'm an avid baseball fan. Honestly the consoles are going to be about the same. Even if they aren't, the majority of games we play are 3rd party developers. They aren't going to be very different at all.

I'm going PS4 solely for MLB the show. If EA had decided to back MVP then I may have thought otherwise...

Yeah if I want motion gaming I'll buy an original Wii... They are what now? $79? Less than the difference of the PS4 vs XB1 w/ kinect.

Don't forget MLB The Show. If any baseball fan buys an XB1, they are insane.

MLB the show is simply amazing, no other baseball videogame compares, I've been playing it since it came out, I definitely should have mentioned it

Bunch of fanboy talk? Its simple, the PS4 has 1152 SP's and the Xbox one has a mere 768 SP's giving the PS4 50% more raw shader performance. This means the PS4 will have a far more powerful CPU, not to mention that it has GDDR5 memory instead of DDDR3 memory that the Xbox one has. Guess what the g stands for-graphics, this means that PS4's gddr5 memory interacts and works better with the PS4's already superior GPU making it the more powerful machine, plain and simple, I'm not being a fanboy, I'm just stating facts, maybe you should try it instead of calling anyone who says something good about the PS4 a fanboy.

BattleField 4, Multiplatform, PS4 will be able to run it at 60 FPS Xbox one will not be able to.

I agree with Charles, bunch of babble, can't even understand you. Either way don't bother replying, I thought i was having a normal argument with a mature person but after seeing you toss stuff like "Take that sony teet out of your mouth" and " shows you take serious medication due to an inability to ascertain reality versus your make believe PS world that exists in fanboi's heads" shows that you aren't mature enough to have a normal civilized argument without insulting. Different opinions are fine, arguing is fine, it's part of life but when you don't argue like an adult should, it just makes you look childish. Have a good day.

As a senior citizen who has been "gaming" since pin ball and Pong; I find that Gears Judgement was dreadful, Halo is becoming too predictable, and does anyone ever finish Mass Effect? The Last of Us, Uncharted and GOW are formidable games...for gamers. Live is superior, no question! PSN is a true work in progress, but it can only get better! I have owned every game platform made, and have waited over night for both the PS3 and 360. I find the PS3 controller is more friendly to my arthritic fingers :), but I will have both units in the hope that MS will get me excited again! I'm surely not a fan boy at 62! I don't golf, hunt or fish...I play video games, and wait for developers to excite me. The Last of Us by Naughty Dog was my "Game of the Year". For now, I'll buy both units and wait to see which Games and system appeal the most to me. Whatever system you buy; enjoy the time you have with these wonderful machines! At my age this could be the last of the systems I buy; death catches up to us all!

From Respawn's @NicholasGigante "that's from 2010. No PS4 controllers existed then. Also, we play games at work so we have all systems. Got a WiiU also" .Sorry to bust your bubbles...

This article was written by an XBox fanboy or someonee being paid by Microsoft to sell the idea that the last couple of months haven't happened. It's do obvious, in the way he plays up the 180's and downplays or outright overlooks other facts. Like 1) MS still charging $100 more for a camera many don't want--forcing it on you, and 2) an aweful lot of people don't care about FIFA or another iteration of Halo etc.

Sony's console may be more powerful, but will that translate into better games? Not necessarily as many people view the quality of games on more than a platform's graphical capabilities or raw processing power.
In the past and even currently, Sony has attempted DRM policies for their products as all corporations have at one time or another. Don't think they'll never find a way to rejigger a planned path when they can clearly see the reaction from Microsoft's announcements.
Cheaper? The $100 difference is due to Sony wanting to undercut their chief competitor by dropping a component that was integrated into the original PS4 experience. Another consideration on the price is that because their console is cheaper, Sony must capitalize on game sales or their business won't survive the marginal profits they're setting up for themselves.
Game focused messaging, yes. Microsoft was game focused from day one as well, but chose to parse out their message to the public by touting the new entertainment possibilities of their system. Clearly the games demonstrated by Microsoft show they're serious about delivering great games. Sony chose to push games first and foremost because they didn't on the PS3, much to their dismay. This generation features a reversal on both companies' approaches to their market. Sony is aiming more directly at a core audience and allowing the casual to approach them for the media/social features. Microsoft aims to take on the casual market more directly this time and count on their games library to hold the core audience. Both approaches are valid, but to think that one is more game focused than the other is definitely a laughable conclusion.
In the end, the price difference will be a deciding factor as well as the experience that the customer is looking for. Want an upgraded online experience and remote play options?, then the PS4 is your best fit. If you want to try new voice/gesture based control and expanded gaming experiences, then the Xbox One is your home. Price may help in the short run, but console adoption will best be measured in games and overall experience with the devices themselves. Time will tell.
Purchase decision a no-brainer? Hardly. Thousands of dollars spent no matter who you choose, but choose wisely as you have to live with the money you spent.

50% stronger? I would definitely like to see this 50% capability increase.
More powerful GPU? Yes. Higher RAM? Yes.
The power of a console can be a great selling point, but games are what sells them and unless you can actually harness the potential of a system, all that power goes to waste.
Your choice to purchase a PS4 is great, but basing it on the power by itself suggests that you might've been better off with a gaming PC as they're certainly more powerful than the PS4 and Xbox One combined.
Base your choice off the games you want and you cannot go wrong.

BF4 is running at 60 FPS on Xbox One. Where did you hear that it doesn't?

This is true, however the lead architect/ director of both Demons Souls (DeS) and Dark Souls (DS) has been working on a very well kept secret project for a while now and I am hoping that the project is Demons Souls 2.

yeah i can really see that "creativity" with the killzone series. a halo rip off.

The Only edge i continue to see PS fans say are "More power, Cheaper" Because it's more powerful and cheaper does not necessarily mean it is the better console. The power increase has already been proven to not give that much of an edge over X1 so why do Sony fans continue to use this excuse?

I honestly think both consoles are great, but if you really are deciding which console to buy over which one has more power. You really call yourself a gamer? Being a gamer is about the games, WHO gives a flying fuck about power, I only care about the GAMES!

I'm all xbox one. Ps4 sucks and its to cheap I don't want to buy crap.

I agree. They WILL bring it back. And I cant wait. Its the future of gaming. How many people complain about itunes, valve, or kindle? Everything is going digital. I dont see people wanting angry birds or candy crush saga on a disc. Microsoft took initiative to bring in the new era of gaming, and sadly they didnt explain it good enough and it scared a bunch of people. As a great man once said "If I would have asked the people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses" -Ford

as a pure gamer i am getting both. And for sure Games are what defines the best experience.
But as i recall Sony always had the upper hand on exclusives since ps2 from ICO to uncharted & the Last of Us.
The exclusives Microsoft has are good(gears of war, forza, halo,Alan wake and some more) but not enough to kill Sony's exclusives.
Either way i cant wait to play forza 5 and killzone on my next-gen consoles.

Hahahaha. Creativity like what? The kinect? Voice controlled tv? Azure cloud? Xbl? Xbox controller? Snap? Hdmi passthrough? Digital downloads? Or do you mean creativity as in playstations graphics. Or maybe you meant the companies and not the consoles, in which case I will point at every pc in almost every home all across the world, while you show me your dvd player and speakers.

lol

Kids need go to bed more early these days.

not to say that sony is trying to follow microsoft in every foot step, because they now that Microsoft is doing right since xbox.
Now they charge for psn, put a headphone jack in the psx controller copy kinect, make the ps4 square and black and so on...

My kids love these games, and Microsoft has been game friendly since your dad play minesweeper and solitaire in windows.

lol the ps4 controler has the second stick since ps one, useless for those days games, then ps4 has powerfull hadware since ps3, useless for its gen games.
i dont think any game developer is going to expend much making a game shine in powerfull hadware, they want profits money before some scene guy upload the game to the pirate bay...and e4 flas her come up...

i lives in boston

the developers make the difference...dont forget that.

there is also an article for PsX fanboys too...maybe sony paid them too

you realise that ps1 and 2 where square.... for that matter nes was square. they are all jacking atari and nes. atari was black as well . and ps2 was also black. ps2 was out before xbox. who jacked who? xbox 360 was white untill later. and ps4 jacked the wii. if they jacked xbox there would be more of us jumping around like morons in front of a camera that at first couldnt register black people ..... i think you have been served my friend

how is sony moving forward ?

not to say that sony is trying to follow microsoft in every foot step, because they now that Microsoft is doing right since xbox.
Now they charge for psn, put a headphone jack in the psx controller copy kinect, make the ps4 square and black and so on...

yeah and those who put private information in their accounts get spammed by the hackers who take psn down

sounds like an xb fan boy rant

a camera it looks like the old kinect, m$ force sony to make ps move and now is forcing sony to sell a cheap version of kinect to you so ps4 users taste what innovation means.

talking about x1 and ps4, in the pass and present Microsoft and its widowed stuff always has been metro style.

Whether or not it is the future of gaming is still up in the air. Personally, I (and apparently millions of others) like having the physical media, do not like being told what I can and cannot do with items I paid for and yes... own.
I do not like not want to be paying the same price for a game or book for that matter, that has no physical media to it.

Who in the hell was talking about angry birds on disk? If you are going to use something like that as an argument... youve done 2 things. The first is that youve lost the argument, The second is that youve lost all credibility.
Buh Bye

What about PS+? Comparing membership of Live Gold and free service like PSN isn't very enlightening.

I have no problem with PS+, but it's not cheaper than XBL. They are the same price ($60/yr retail).

How so? Because as far as what has been presented visually there is no evidence of that in fact games actually look better on xbox morn running at higher frame rates in full 1080 p resolution for some titles

It's not the future of gaming. It's the present when it comes to the PC and mobile gaming. Physical media is overrated. It's costly, takes up space, and can get broken, stolen, or lost. Something happened to your hard drive or digital files? Just download them again.

where is your visual evidence of this because from all the games I have seen the Xbox 1 games are running not all of them but some of them are running at full 1080 p resolution and 60 frames a second again link me to visual evidence

That's not necessarily the case. Industry buzz was that Sony had their own DRM they planned to implement with the PS4, but changed direction when they saw the beating MS took before E3.

Lets see the link that has that admission. But you cant post it because there is no such admission.

Its the other way around duffus

industry buzz = rumor, nothing more
show me the proof of that

Really????? Based off what??? Link????

Of course, but "Sony has stayed strong to their main goals from the beginning." is just as speculative. I won't ask Jake to show me "proof of that" because that would be ridiculous. Like I said: Not necessarily the case.

Im getting an XBox One when Witcher 3 comes out but i might change my mind when i build a new PC. So for now PS4.

I do agree to an extent but we simply have to wait for the visual proof. There is a lot of things to consider like heating issues. Im curious how the cooling works in the PS4 compared to the Xbox One. That could be a major factor, it could drop performance significantly. I only say this because its smaller and Xbox One looks to have more space. Still i believe Sony tackled that problem years ago since its conception. But again we will have to see.

How is it cheap

How is that speculative on Jakes part? I did not notice Sony doing a 180 on EVERY policy relating to the PS4 like M$ did with regards to the X1.

All that I have read from Sonys press releases does not in any way shape or form give doubt to their plans or goals.
What you are doing is gainsaying his comment because you cannot refute it honestly and with any solid proof.
Playing with words and chopping logic doesnt do you good.

Lets see. It was X1 that did a 180 on every policy they had for the unit. Sony didnt change a thing from their initial presentation.

Looks to me like M$ is trying really really really hard to become PS4 lite.
Oh wait, there is one thing that M$ did not change and that is putting everything behind a pay wall, including services that are paid for already such as Netflix.
Yup M$ is sure the leader here.

There is no visual evidence as the consoles are not out yet. In a few months when they are I'm sure there will be videos on youtube comparing the two. As of now, all we can predict about a difference in their power is by looking at their hardware. The PS4 clearly has better hardware so I'm predicting it to be more powerful, of course I could be wrong but for now it seems like the PS4 is more powerful.

Sony is following Microsoft's every step? First of all, they don't charge for PSN, they charge for PS Plus, which has a lot to offer. Also I don't think that Microsoft invented the headphone jack. And PS Move is very different from Kinect and it's not forced on you when you buy the console as it is with the xbox one. Also I seem to remember Microsoft changing all of its policies just a little while back to seem more like Playstation and try to clean up the PR mess it got itself into, unlike Sony, who actually is consumer friendly, and doesn't fake it.

I understand your point, however the information about PS Plus subscribers is not available. However, the only point I was trying to make was that PSN was successful and the fact that the number of its accounts doubles that of XBL proves that even though it is a free service, PSN numbers doubles XBL, so its ridiculous to say PSN isn't successful, also add to that number your point about how many PS Plus subscribers there are, further boosting PSN's numbers past XBL's. But by your comment you are implying that not everyone who has an xbox has XBL since its paid, and everyone who has a playstation has PSN, since its free. People sign up for either of these services to play multiplayer, so the number of accounts represents the number of people that participate in multiplayer on either console, indicating the success of PSN, paid or not.

Neither you, Jake, nor I know what Sony's plans were before this summer. We're certainly not going to learn anything from a press release. I gainsaid nothing - I simply pointed out that his portrayal of Sony as a benevolent champion of the consumer, as a point of fact, may not necessarily be accurate.
Sony's "main goal" is the same as Microsoft's and every other public company: Increasing their stock price. Of course they've "stayed strong" to that goal, but I don't think that's what Jake was talking about.
You keep demanding proof from me, but I'm not refuting anything or stating anything as a fact. I don't have access to Sony's internal memos from June, so I can't say for sure what they had planned before the penny dropped on E3. I admit that I just don't know, and I don't think you do either.

This did indeed happen but it is very unlikely this will happen again since how much money it cost Sony, I'm sure they don't want to take such a hit again so security is tighter than ever, as they have already stated they have boosted security.

Not true, It's $50 dollars a year, go check Amazon if you want.

I don't think you got my point. Saying PSN was successful is like saying Xbox Live Silver was successful. Everyone who hooked their console up to the internet had one of these services. They're free and you get it just by setting up your profile on the console. 46 million Silver members paid money to be Gold members. How many PSN members paid money to be PS+ members? Probably a lot less, but then PS+ was not required to play multiplayer online. I'm not implying anything here, I'm just saying you can't judge the "success" of these two services relatively just by looking at subscriber numbers.

And by "drastically reduced prices" I didn't mean it is drastically cheaper than XBL I meant it offered drastically reduced prices on things like games.

Ok.
PS+ 12 months $49.99 code download
Xbox Live Gold 12 months $48.59 code download, $45.35 for the physical card. Yes these are sale prices, but these are always on sale. I also just got Bully for 75% as a Gold member, which was less than $4. /shrug.

Now I do get what you were saying, there is no way of gauging the difference of success between the two services because they are simply different, this helps and is a better argument than my initial one against DPLv2 who was saying that XBL was clearly better than PSN which is why I posted that comment in the first place.

You do know that Kinect has more functionality than just Motion Gaming, right? It allows for voice and face recognition as well as heart rate monitors (think Survival Horror).
Then again, if I wanted a half-baked Motion device, I'd get the PS4 with it's Eye Camera and no developer support

When was I or you referring to the sale prices of either service, you talked about the retail prices and so did I. I was only commenting that what you said was incorrect, I wasn't arguing there was such a huge price difference, because I mean, really, it's a 10 dollar difference for a year, who cares, you can probably find PS Plus stuff cards on sale as well. Also, do you even know the discounts and free games you get w/PS Plus? Uncharted 3, Assassins Creed 3 and Battlefield 3 for free and on and on and on, Bully is a cool game, but isn't it from the middle of last decade?

You know NOTHING of what you speak of. Comparing Shaders of GPUs is like comparing apples to oranges. Sure, the PS4 GPU has more shaders, which can offload coding to the CPU (faster, due to the GDDR5 RAM), but, the X1 has a CUSTOM CPU/GPU chip which handles audio differently as well as the 32MB ESRAM cache (akin the 360's chip setup). We all remember how the 360 was the lead development platform of last gen; perhaps MS is trying to replicate that with the X1?
And don't forget that it's the only platform that can handle DirectX 11.2

I also had heard numerous times that Sony had a DRM service in place, it is just likely they didn't implement it due to the huge fallout that Microsoft went through for announcing it. And yes, in the end it completely comes down to money, neither Sony nor Microsoft is a "benevolent champion", they both want to be successful and profitable, and it is profitable for Sony to portray themselves as a "benevolent champion", so that's what they have been shooting for. If Sony had revealed their DRM plans first, then this situation would be completely opposite of what it is now.

Every article I have read has said that the PS4 has a 50% more powerful GPU and plays games with a 25% higher frames per second. I'll admit that I am certainly no expert on the subject but the people who are that have written on the subject have said that the PS4's higher shader count is very significant to the graphics it will produce as shown in the higher frames per second so you aren't convincing me at all.

I can't deny any of that. In the end we're talking about 80 cents a month, and there is speculation that the cost of PS+ will go up to $5/mo. with the launch of the PS4, on top of the fact that PS+ will be required at that point to play multiplayer online. But right now, it's true that PS+ is $10/yr cheaper undiscounted.

Are there ANY 1st Party Launch titles to get excited about on the PS4? It just seems like Sony is bashing X1 to cover up all the flaws in their own launch lineup...
That is what seems Unprofessional to me

Spoken like a true fanboy, Killzone plays absolutely nothing like Halo

Will all of the sony fan boys going on about the supposed massive graphics advantage the PS4 has over the xBox One PLEASE tell me why they aren't just sticking to PC? It's such a mute point considering both consoles will look a lot better than the already great games of today and PCs will be 200%!!! MORE powerful within a year.

It's silly.

Although I like Sony, I hate MS more. Who was it that stole software to even make their name? Who ended up in front of the supreme court several times, both for killing netscape through illegal business practice and for attempting to have a monopoly through undercutting their prices and then raising them when the damage was done? Who told a judge they didn't have the technical prowess to remove their own browser from windows only to have the judge tell them how many seconds it took him to do it? How many patches were made to Windows 95 after it's launch to make it stable? Hint: It's a 3 digit figure. Who manufactured the Zune and said it was mandatory to connect to windows...only to have tens of thousands of models fail to link to windows? Who manufactured the Xbox 360 so that if you change it's orientation it will actually destroy the disc???? Who publicly stated they had no work around for that? Including each 360 iteration that has launched since then?? Who launched the 360 in millions with ZERO heat sinks in them so that 100% of them were prone to a quick red ring of death? Do you know what that would have cost them en masse? 2 cents a console! Who said you can't use any normal wireless system but must by their weak and horribly overpriced MS model? Who refuses to even use a generic power cord? All sony systems have used power cords (no bricks) that are commonly used with radios, tv's, monitors. When Valve made Left 4 Dead 2, they came up with some dlc where you meet the people from the first game. They told Sony and MS they wanted it to be free as a gift to the fans for their support. Sony said sure. MS said no and took their usual cut. Everyone needs to make money, I understand that. But MS take it to a level unlike other companies. There's no consumer love. No respect. When MS was asked what the military would do to play xbox one (when it was still online only) since the majority of military personnel wouldn't have access to internet, MS said, "We already have a product for them. It's called Xbox 360." That's an actual quote I'm sad to say. Hey guys, I know there's new hardware, but don't buy Sony to play...stay with the 8 year old phasing out system. It's no secret that before reversing policies, MS were staunchly arrogant to their OWN supporters. I hate MS. The day they go under I'll have a party. There's no ethics, there's no support of their customer base. They never do anything right the first time. Xbox 1 (as opposed to Xbox One) actually lost money. The Gamecube which didn't do as well made money. The 360 doesn't do 1080p natively but found a way to cut it through software only. The P3 made a few huge mistakes. The P1 and P2 ruled the roost. The P3 will only be seen as a hiccup in their history, and not a bad one as they sold more units than the 360, and that's with one less year of time to sell. Now the P4 will launch with greater power at the same time. Japan and Europe have already crushed MS in presales. Even in the United States Sony is currently outselling MS. Sony released their numbers. MS did not. Gee I wonder why. Ask anyone in any gaming store what he's sold more of so far and you'll get your answer. MS will launch in only 13 countries to start with and is currently only slated for 9 others next year. Sony has significantly more markets about to hit. Some places in Europe are selling more than 4x Sony than MS. I'm glad the X is underpowered this time solely because I WANT them to fail. They're a terrible terrible company. Course if I had my way, Nintendo would somehow come out with the strongest system as I like that company quite a bit. Sony's good. Nintendo is good. MS...do they have to spit on your mother before you realize what they're about? I enjoyed my 360. Yes they ripped off Nintendo's Mii's and made it MANDATORY that everyone of every age create a cartoon character or you're not allowed to play on their system. Yes they have an ad filled ultra colorful and annoying interface. For those of you who have never tried a P3, check out the interface and how customizable it is. See how you're not forced to scroll through crap. I got so tired of pushing past Zune to get to Netflix. Not that it was difficult, but the principle of the matter. Do you know the plans of the Xbox One as far as using ads in conjunction with Kinnect to see who's in the room? Look it up. MS are and have always been aggressive to get your cash regardless of method. Even to the point of illegality (hence their many court appearances). I HATED the P3 controller and loved the 360 controller. Hands down the better. Glad they finally changed the highly dated Sony controller. The jury is out, but from what I've read, it's legions better. The 360 had party chat, a better controller, and double the ram. The P4 has more ram, certainly party chat and more from both, and an updated controller...along with a stronger system. The 360 and p3 are each superior in power in different ways. The p3 is 33% quicker, but with half the ram, I say they lost it in most (but not all games). All MS advantages are gone and their biggest success will have been the 360. Incidentally, for the uneducated, that 8 gig in both systems...let me put it this way; which is better, 8 gig of gddr5 or 24 gig of ddr3? The 8 is. To give you an exact figure of comparison between the two, Sony is moving at 310. MS at 100. More than 3 times the ram power before we factor in MS's esram. The esram not only doesn't make up all the difference, but now the memory isn't unified. There are a number of problems with that any programmer worth his salt can tell you. People talk about them both having Radeon cards, but while they are both 7000 series, they are NOT the same in that series. The Sony is carrying one 3 generations higher. The difference in the two is not subtle by any stretch of the imagination. If the systems were equal in every other way (which they're most certainly not), that alone would make a huge difference. The P4 is 2 ghz vs 1.6 ghz. We've all heard the 1.84 teraflops vs 1.23. That's a 50% increase...coupled with a stronger processor. The one thing no one really talks about are some of the ways the P4 will handle information. Even the modern PC hasn't done this yet. Mark Cerny wrote an exhaustive technical article on what the P4 can do that has nothing to do with it's muscle. This CAN NOT be overstated. If you're not familiar with what he's done with the P4 other than the standard specs everyone is talking about, please look it up. It's impressive to say the least. People talk about MS and their cloud. They bought a start up cloud company called Metrics Hub. Yeah that's all well and good...except that Sony bought Gaikai for $380 million. Anyone that's followed Gaikai at all knows why what MS is attempting is laughable by comparison. MS just simply do very little right. Very very little and rarely on the first attempt. The proof will be in the pudding. The truest differences in these consoles will show itself halfway through their life cycle, with only moderate differences at first (and in favor of Sony). Bungie have already stated that the difference in graphics for Destiny between the two consoles will be "significant." For you PC gamers out there, we are aware of what computers can do. Now, can you find me a $400 computer that can compete with a P4? No? Ok then, nobody cares. Most people don't have a truck load of cash to dump into a computer. Plus, with respect to Steam who I admire, both console networks destroy whatever you're using for PC. And cheating is about 10,000x less likely. Cheating is flippin rampant on PC as you know. Everyone's on the same page and using identical hardware when their using the same console. At the end of the day, power isn't everything. If there are games on the Xbox One (or Nintendo Wii) that you prefer, or if you're just crazy about their tv features, well clearly that's the console for you and more power to you my friend. I hate MS and prefer Sony in many ways. That doesn't make either of us an idiot. People need to relax. Some things are literal. Barring some unforeseen trump card from MS (I won't hold my breath), the Sony is literally more powerful. That doesn't mean you're mother is a whore if you want the MS. But me...I hate them. No ethics. Bad treatment of their own supporters. Bad product. They're already losing the sales war and that's going to get exponentially worse once many truths set in. I'm rooting for Sony. If you read my novel here, kudos. Now 50% of you will ridicule me...and that's ok. Just please don't try to say I'm wrong vaguely without facts to back up your point. And if you can prove it, I'm more than happy to be corrected. You'll get a firm handshake :P. I just get so tired of people responding to others with, "LOL!!! You must be dumb as a stump you effing retarded xbox/sony fanboy!!" You're not really laughing out loud. You're attempting to make someone feel stupid and failing miserably while exposing your mentality of a 13 year old juvenile delinquent. It's ok to disagree. Apparently it takes some staggering level of strength to be kind to each other. Toodles.

they did the right move...

M$ come up with innovation, new ways to make money, new ways to protect intellectual property but sony dont care about developers thats why we get bad ports for ps3 and now for ps4, look how big franchises are first aimed for x1.

All ms did was to try to create a licked ecosystem like apples system. They tried to do what they do best. To try to force the consumer into microsofts version of the future. Your comment about sony not caringg about the devs is laughable to tje point that your entire post is rendered invalid

You guys.. seriously, this is all fun to talk trash over something you know nothing about. I was at the GameStop convention yesterday and played on both consoles. YOU CAN NOT TELL THE DIFFERENCE! They both looked phenomenal in graphics. So from
"personal" experience. This whole 50% more powerful (HYPE) is false, and I am going to have to disagree for now!
