After a lengthy break, UDON finally goes back to releasing an ongoing series based on the likes of Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, and the rest.

News

Back in 2009, UDON released the final issue of Street Fighter II Turbo, their last ongoing series based on the popular Capcom franchise. Since then, they released a couple minis and decided that they would only release hardcover graphic novels to further the adventures of the various world warriors. During this time, they released an origin story for Akuma and a two-parter called Super Street Fighter that came and went without any fanfare.

Now they’re finally getting back into the game with Street Fighter Unlimited #1 coming out this December. Put together by the company’s resident Street Fighter writer Ken Siu-chong and a tag-team of artists Joe Ng and Edwin Huang, the series will do a more star-studded take on the Street Fighter IIIstoryline. As set up on in the Super Street Fighter books, Gill and Urien’s Secret Society is about to strike in its plans for world domination. Much like all the other Street Fighter comics UDON’s released over the past decade, each issue will feature a four-page backup story by the likes of Jim Zub, Adam Warren, Chris Sarracini, Jeffrey “Chamba” Cruz, Omar Dogan, and others.

For the most part, UDON’s Street Fighter comics have been completely faithful to the source material. Now that they’re getting into Street Fighter III territory, they’ll have to stray a bit. Street Fighter III and its upgrades (Second Impact and Third Strike) are known for completely changing up the roster outside of a few scant names while telling one of the more ill-defined storylines in a time when Capcom was all about detailing the series’ mythos. Street Fighter Unlimited will counter that by tossing in the likes of characters from all the different eras of Street Fighter (Guile, Cammy, Abel, Alex) while rewriting the story into something you can actually sink your teeth into.

The December release date will help tie it into the release of Street Fighter V for PlayStation 4. Also, as revealed the other day, IDW will be letting loose with a crossover comic called Street Fighter X GI Joe a few months later. It’s nice to see content finally being released.
