Seeking funding on Kickstarter, Poi's a 3D platformer in the vein of Super Mario 64. Here's the new trailer...
TrailerKickstarter's something of a double-edged sword when it comes to game development. On one hand, it provides a platform where indie studios can pitch their new ideas to millions of potential investors. But on the other, it's open to the same strange forces as any other marketplace, where higher-profile projects - the Bloodstaineds and Elite Dangerouses of the world - garner far more attention than an unfamiliar game from an unknown dev team.
This might be why the 3D platform adventure Poi hasn't created quite as much fuss as it might have deserved. Taking inspiration from such games as Super Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie - with some level design tricks from Nintendo's more recent output, like Super Mario 3D World and Skyward Sword - Poi offers a free-roaming world of airships and flying islands. It's in a fairly finished state, too, with developer Polykid seeking $80,000 to create additional levels and add polish rather than build the thing from scratch.
Poi is, however, running out of time if it's to reach its minimum goal. At the time of writing, there's 47 hours to go before it hits its 3rd September deadline, and it's around $56,000 from its $80,000 target. Check out the new trailer below, and an older trailer we've embedded beneath that. They may just convince you to back this charming-looking game yourself.
