Original Story 6.4.15:
Finally, we're getting a new Star Wars RPG! This time in the form of a mobile game called Star Wars: Uprising, which takes place after the events of Return of the Jedi, as the galaxy begins to rise against the Empire after their defeat in the Battle of Endor.
The game is being developed by mobile studio Kabam (Marvel Contest of Champions) in conjunction with Disney and Lucasfilm. It's an action RPG that can be played with up to four players. Classes will include Smuggler, Bounty Hunter, Rebel Guerilla, Diplomat, Gambler, and an undisclosed role.
Here's the awesome first trailer:
Talking to IGN, Daniel Erickson, senior design director of the game, introduced some of the game's plot and characters:
Local Imperial Governor Adelhard locks down the entire region. This “Iron Blockade” stops all incoming and outgoing space traffic and communications, trapping the people within.
Adelhard denies all "rumors" of the Emperor’s death and kills anyone who speaks otherwise. Adelhard is a true believer who mourns the death of Vader and cannot imagine that somebody would want to live in chaos. In his own private world he’s made for himself, the Empire is still all-powerful. Life is normal, and he maintains control with his enforcer, Commander Bragh, the leader of the Purge Troopers.
The Rebels were chased from the Anoat sector following their defeat on Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back, and their presence in this part of space is still relatively weak. Instead, the smuggler groups, the local assassin groups, the different crime cartels, and the former nobles of the sector have all banded together to form this very unlikely uprising – a rebel group of their own.”
Erickson continued by talking about the game's place in the many video games that have come before:
It’s pretty in the BioWare world when you’re not in a dungeon, and pretty in the Diablo world when you are in a dungeon. It’s a whole lot of storytelling and a whole lot of deep systems and things to explore outside, and then a pretty smash-em RPG when you’re running around stomping things.
Here's a synopsis of the game straight out of StarWars.com:
Star Wars: Uprising will feature key events set in the Anoat Sector, inclusive of Hoth and Cloud City, and will allow players to create characters, go on missions, build their gear and skills, and organize crews and factions to participate in wide-ranging battles. Keeping up with tradition of Star Warsroleplaying games, players will learn hundreds of new abilities and collect classic gear and equipment conducive to creating their own takes on iconic roles: Smuggler, Bounty Hunter, Rebel Guerilla, Diplomat, Gambler, or something new entirely.
“We have people from Blizzard, Lucasfilm… we have assembled a true, in the traditional sense, RPG studio,” Kabam general manager Tim Ernst told WIRED.
“It is a true RPG,” said Kabam senior vice president Aaron Loeb. “It is really about building your Star Warsfantasy, of being the character you most want to be in that universe.”
The beta will start rolling out in the next few weeks, but no solid release date has been set beyond Fall 2015.
Finally, here's a really cool poster for the game:
