History's full of games that were teased, even developed, but never released. One of those was Sammy's Viewpoint 2064, a sequel to its 1990s Neo Geo shooter, Viewpoint. In line with most games for the Nintendo 64, Viewpoint 2064 was envisioned as a 3D reworking of the original's isometric, Zaxxon-style action, resulting in a kind of Star Fox-inspired blaster with more linear level designs and fewer barrel rolls.

Teased as recently as the year 2000 but never released, it seemed that Viewpoint 64 was one of those games that would simply vanish into the archives, never to be seen again. All that changed when a prototype cartridge changed hands on eBay for a startling $3000 (or thereabouts). Thanks to the efforts of YouTube user Rama Shotton, who contacted the winner of the cartridge, some footage of the game has finally appeared online for the first time.

The quality isn't exactly sparkling, but it gives us a fresh insight into what Sammy was working on. As you can see, it was in a surprisingly advanced state, and while its gameplay probably wouldn't have broken any new ground, it could have provided the shooter-light N64 with one of its better entries in the genre.

Take a look for yourself...
