Star Fox Zero gets a new release date, but it's still a little farther down the road.

News

Star Fox's newest adventure seemed right around the corner when it was delayed back in September so that Nintendo and Miyamoto could do a bit more work on the game. It's all good, though. Nintendo puts its heart and soul into all of its games, and if time is what Star Fox Zero needs to be amazing, then we'll roll with it.

That said, there's now a release date in sight. During yesterday's Nintendo Direct, the first since the passing of Satoru Iwata, the Big N announced Star Fox Zero's new release date. You'll be able to perform all the barrel rolls you want when the game drops on April 22 on the Wii U.

Here's a new gameplay trailer to celebrate:

Original Story 09.18.15:

After several years away from our screens, Nintendo's space combat series Star Foxis returning to the Wii U. A HD rendering of the third-person, arcade-style shooting of old, Star Fox Zero's major introduction is its transforming ship craft - which can now change into a helicopter and a two-legged, AT-AT-like tank - and the use of the second screen on the GamePad for bombing runs.

Star Fox Zero was originally scheduled for release this November, but Shigeru Miyamoto has now revealed that its launch is being put back to allow time for "further polishing."

"I made a big decision last week," Miyamoto writes. "We have been developing Star Fox Zero for Wii U with the aim of releasing it this year. Although we felt that the development had been progressing well, we now believe that we will need a little more time to work on areas such as the unprecedented discovery that we want players to experience in the game by using two screens, and further polishing the level designs and perfecting the tone of the cut scenes.

"While we have already reached the stage where it would be technically possible to release the title in time for the year-end holiday season, we want to polish the game a bit more so that players will be able to more smoothly grasp the new style of play that we are proposing."

On a personal note, the version of Star Fox Zero we recently played at a press event handled nicely, though we did struggle a bit with the need to look from the TV screen to the monitor on the GamePad. It's possible this is something that becomes second nature with practice, though.

As for when Star Fox Zerowill emerge, Miyamoto adds:

"All the members of the development team are doing our best so that the final product will not betray your expectations. And the game will not be delayed for a very long time – we're aiming to launch the game in Q1 2016. Please stay tuned for further announcements."

What he said, basically: when we learn of a more precise date, we'll be sure to pass it along.
