As part of its deal with Disney, EA has plans for Battlefront sequels and other Star Wars games...
NewsAny game with the Star Wars name on it's pretty much guaranteed to gain a certain amount of attention, and the mixture of timing and nostalgia means that Battlefront's status as the biggest game of winter 2015 is surely sealed already.
Publisher EA is so confident of Battlefront's success that it's already openly talking about plans for further games - not just sequels to Battlefront, which seem inevitable, but "other style games" set in the Star Wars universe.
"Star Wars Battlefront is a traditional first-person style shooter game," said EA chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen. "Our goal is to make future Battlefront games as well as other style games around the Star Wars franchise, both on mobile as well as console and PC. It's a huge opportunity for us."
Jorgensen also hinted, during his presentation at a conference in San Francisco, that EA's future games will have access to the characters, planets and character designs we'll see in The Force Awakens and other Star Warsfilms, not just the existing ones we've largely seen in the new Battlefront.
"We get access to all of the historical content as well as all the new content developed," Jorgensen said. "The beauty of the Star Warsfranchise is it's almost unlimited in what you can do with it."
Given that EA has a 10-year licencing deal with Disney, it's little surprise that the publisher plans to make the absolute most of it. Let's just hope that, if EA decides to make a Star Wars-themed fighting game, it makes a better job of it than LucasArts managed back in 1997...
