There are all kinds of things planned for the 20th anniversary of Pokemon, from the logical to the slightly bizarre. There are Pokemon-themed Nintendo 2DS consoles on the way. Pokken Tournament finally gives us that Tekken-Pokemoncross-over we were all waiting for. Pokemon Go will see the franchise head to smart devices.
The weirdest thing we've seen so far in this, the Year of Pokemon? How about Great Detective Pikachu: The Birth Of A New Duo?
So as far as we can find out, it's a 3DS adventure-mystery game where Pikachu dons a deerstalker and pretends to be Benedict Cumberbatch. It's a curious move by itself, but consider this: Pikachu drinks coffee and talks - actually talks - in a gravelly voice like Takeshi Kitano. It's worth pointing out that Detective Pikachu doesn't appear to be the same Pikachu as in the main series, though - at one point in the trailer, he meets another Pikachu who, in more traditional Pokemonstyle, can only utter his own name in a squeaky voice.
We don't yet know when (or even if) Great Detective Pikachu's coming to the US or UK yet, but we're looking forward to finding out more about the rodent super-sleuth. Does he play the violin? Does he take morphine and keep tobacco in a Persian slipper?
