There's an animation/live-action hybrid Sonic the Hedgehog movie in the works. We've got the details.

What took them so long? Sonic the Hedgehog, veteran of countless video games, an animated series (with another on the way), and a long-running comic book series from Archie Comics is coming to the big screen in 2018.

The Sonic the Hedgehog movie was first announced back in 2014, and at the time it was described as a CG/live-action hybrid with Sony teaming with Marza animation planet, Neal Moritz producing, and a script from Evan Susser and Van Robichaux. It's not clear how much of that team is still in place.

This is the first update we've had on it in quite some time, and it comes from the President and CEO of Sega Sammy, Hajime Satome (via The World Folio):

"Sega Sammy Group is currently planning with Sony Pictures to create a live-action and animation hybrid “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie scheduled for release in 2018. Like with this CG animation production, we would like to expand our business into other entertainment areas beyond what we are currently involved."

Now, let's set aside for a moment the usual concerns that video game movies are, frankly, quite often not any good at all. Sonic is a character who is versatile enough to work in any number of situations, and has a universal, dare we say it, Disney-esque appeal that many video game protagonists lack. Then again, one could say the same thing about Mario and look at how that all turned out.

We are taking casting suggestions for Doctor Eggman down below.
