Overwatch: Dark Horse Comics to Produce Overwatch Graphic Novel

The legendary comic publisher has something special on the way for Overwatch fans.

Some criticized Overwatch for its lack of a traditional single-player mode at the time of the game's launch, but just because it may not have used a campaign as its vessel for storytelling, that hasn't stopped Blizzard from developing a rich lore for Overwatch via other mediums such as their video releases and digital comics.

Now, it appears you can add a graphic novel to the game's extended universe materials list.

Dark Horse Comics announced at SDCC that they are working with Blizzard to produce a graphic novel based on Overwatch. Currently, Dark Horse already produces digital comics in conjunction with Blizzard that typically precede the launch of a new character, but this recent announcement confirms that the team is working on a physical standalone graphic novel that will follow the adventures of Overwatch's heroes.

Although this novel does not yet have a name, it will clock in at 100-pages and focus on the original Overwatch strike team (meaning that characters like Reaper and Soldier 76 will work side-by-side). Dark Horse has not yet confirmed if the current artist (Bengal) or the current writer (Blizzard's Andrew Robinson) of the digital comics will also be the ones to work on this novel.

However, we do know that the comic will release next year along with a special Art of Overwatch collection book featuring concept art from the game that has not yet been made publically available.

It will be interesting to see if Dark Horse continues to produce physical comics of Overwatch beyond this installment. It's certainly likely that the success of the novel will dictate the future of their agreement, and it's also very likely that even non-Overwatch fans may find themselves unable to resist the call of this project given how incredible the digital comics have been so far.
