The first is a more modern Sonic title, while the second is a blast from the past.

Sega's recent 25th anniversary celebration of the Sonic franchise held at San Diego Comic-Con ended up providing series fans with more than just a reason to celebrate all things Sonic related.

As announced at the event, Sega will be releasing two new Sonic titles by the end of 2017. The first is called Project Sonic (no word on if that's the final name) and it looks...well, it looks a lot like a 3D Sonic game. Its trailer suggests that this is going to be a much darker Sonic game than usual, as it appears to focus on invading giant robots who look determined to destroy the world (as tends to be the case) and a revolution against said robots led by Sonic. This game is currently set to be released for XBO, PS4, PC, and NX sometime around the 2017 holiday season:

The other game announced is very different from Project Sonic, but will no doubt be a welcome sight for longtime Sonic fans in need of a retro fix. It's called Sonic Mania, and it is a kind of anniversary tribute to the speedy blue hedgehog that will reimagine the first three Sonic games and combine them into one release. It's not entirely clear if the games will all be combined into one grand adventure or if the individual originals will somehow be selectable from the title's main menu, but we do know that Sonic Mania will add new zones and abilities to the original games. Additionally, you will be able to play as Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles as you please to do so.

Sonic Mania is being developed by renowned Sonic fan Christian Whitehead, along with the teams at Headcannon Games and PagodaWest Games. You can expect to see it release for PC, PS4, Xbox One and Wii U in the Spring of 2017.
