There will soon be quite a bit more Evolve for players to enjoy.

Developer Turtle Rock Studios recently made their 2015 team-based shooter Evolve a free to play title on PC in an effort to increase the game's player base. That effort continued today with the announcement of a new event called Shear Madness

Shear Madness will run for five weeks and each week will bring with it new content updates for Evolve. The first of these updates (Quantum Surge) was released today and included one of the most significant additions to Evolve since the game first launched in the form of a new medic character named Quantum Caira.

You can check out the introduction trailer for Quantum Caira below:

Most of this medic's abilities are AOE-based, which should come in handy for teams that are able to effectively work together. Turtle Rock noted that effectively using this new character's powerful healing abilities is a matter of proper positioning, which does increase her skill level just a bit in relation to some other healer characters.

What else is coming to Evolve as part of Shear Madness? Well, along with a host of tweaks and improvements that Turtle Rock suggests have all come from the game's community, the most tantalizing new feature is certainly the developer's tease of a new co-op mode as well as the three new map variants that will soon be available.

Also of note is the introduction of advanced tutorial options as well as a player-friendly feature that will allow users to try certain in-game perks out in practice mode before purchasing them for the game itself. Previously, these perks had to be purchased blindly without the opportunity to really test them out.

There's no denying that Evolve never quite lived up to the considerable hype the game received at press shows and other events, but you have to admire the dedication of the game's development team and their attempts to make so many changes to the title in an attempt to fulfill off its undeniable potential. Whether or not it will be enough to recapture the game's lost magic remains to be seen, but those already hooked on Evolve certainly have a healthy amount of content to look forward to in the coming weeks.
