Sources from inside the company claim that the new system will be showcased at a special event.

Multiple sources are reporting that Sony is preparing to reveal their upgraded PlayStation 4 at a New York City gaming event on September 7th.

This story was first reported by the French site Gameblog earlier today and has now been corroborated by multiple news outlets that have been informed by anonymous Sony representatives that the new PlayStation 4 will indeed be officially revealed early next month. These same representatives have also suggested that this event will be a "technical showcase" for Sony and that PlayStation 4 developers will be receiving dev kits of the new system sometime around the public reveal.

At this time, Sony has not yet made an official comment regarding whether or not they are planning to host an event at that time or whether the new PlayStation 4 will be a part of the show if they do.

The next PlayStation 4 (which has been dubbed the PlayStation 4 Neo) was already confirmed to be in development prior to this year's E3 event, but Sony elected to not reveal the system at that show in favor of focusing on upcoming games during the company's presentation.

Aside from that, there is still much about the PlayStation Neo that is unknown. It is believed, however, that the console will upgrade the current PlayStation 4's major technical components, such as the system's CPU and RAM, in an effort to expand the 4K gaming capabilities of the original system. Naturally, then, it is also suspected that the PlayStation 4 Neo will cost more than the base model PlayStation 4, although Sony has not commented on a price range as of yet. They have said, however, that the PlayStation 4 Neo will not impact the development of PlayStation 4 games and that anyone who does not wish to upgrade will not be missing out on any titles.

While the PlayStation 4 still has a healthy lead over the Xbox One in terms of console sales, this system may represent a much more significant release for Sony than the recent Xbox One S did for Microsoft simply because Sony has recently sold off major parts of its business and are now relying more on the PlayStation brand than ever before.
