PS4 and Xbox One gamers will soon get to experience one of the most controversial games in recent memory.
Dear Esther, one of PC gaming's most notorious entrants into the "walking simulator" genre, will soon be making the transition to consoles.
On September 20th, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One gamers will be able to download developer The Chinese Room's controversial exploration game for $10. Dubbed the Landmark Edition, this version of the game will feature a commentary track from the developers, a few new display options, multi-language menus, trophies and achievements, and enhanced audio.
Those that already own the game on PC will be able to upgrade their current copy of the title to the Landmark Edition for free when it releases for consoles.
The release of this edition will also precede a couple of notable live events built around the success of Dear Esther. The first is a live discussion about the game and its impact on the medium that is set to take place on September 30th in London and will be hosted by The Guardian. London will also play host to a live concert featuring music from the Dear Esther soundtrack that will be held in the Milton Court Concert Hall on October 14th. Both of these events are open to the public.
Dear Estheris considered to be the forebearer to games like Firewatch and Everybody's Gone To The Rapture. As such, it was also one of the first titles to attract controversy from some in the gaming world due to its lack of traditional gameplay and emphasis on exploration. Those that love the game fawn over its incredible soundtrack, stunning visuals, and haunting atmosphere. Those that do not...well, perhaps you should take a look at the game's negative Steam reviews to get a better idea of what its most adamant detractors think.
If you've never had the chance to experience Dear Esther, this Landmark Edition certainly sounds like it will be the definitive way to do so.
