What's next for one of gaming's greatest developers?
Famed RPG developer Bioware may soon be ready to announce their next IP.
In an interview with gamesindustrybiz.com, EA Studio's own Patrick Soderlund confirmed that the developer has been working on a brand new property and even hinted that we could be hearing more about it relatively soon.
"We've been very open about the fact that Bioware is working on a new IP," said Soderlund in the interview."We'll get to talk about that in the not too distant future."
Soderlund went on to tout the virtues of balancing IPs with the release of more established franchises by also mentioning that several other studios under the EA name are working on new IPs at the moment. Although he did not clarify which studios are working on something new, he did reference the Star Wars line as an important franchise cornerstone that balances out these new projects which seems to indicate that none of the studios working on Star Wars titles are currently working on any new franchises as well.
As for Bioware, the details of their new property remains a mystery. The company is currently finishing up their work on Mass Effect: Andromeda, and Peter Moore has stated that they are not currently interested in remastering the original Mass Effect trilogy at this time, so it would seem the developer's schedule is about to quite free. It's highly unlikely that they would return to the sci-fi genre with their next IP given that they've been working on Andromeda as of late, and it also feels unlikely that they will develop another medieval fantasy type game given how thoroughly they've covered that territory recently with Dragon Age.
Unless Bioware is planning to abandon their RPG comfort zone and attempt something completely different, it seems likely that they may be designing a game world that is largely of their own creation similar to what they did with Jade Empire.
In case you're wondering, the last time we saw an IP from Bioware was 2009's Dragon Age: Origins, which in and of itself was a spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate.
