Furious Jack Is a Game That Channels Comic Books

If you're the type of 16-bit gaming fan that still keeps their Sega Genesis around just in case the urge to play 1995's side-scrolling, comic book themed, beat 'em up masterpiece Comix Zone overwhelms you...well, we'd like to inform you that there are actually several better options available to experience that particular game and that, perhaps, it would be far more convenient to pursue them. 

We'd also like to turn your attention to an ongoing Kickstarter game by the name of Furious Jack that aims to recreate the visual appeal of games like Comix Zoneand the simple beat 'em up pleasures of titles like Streets of Rage.

Furious Jack is being developed the young team of genre fans over at Forgingames who clearly have done their homework in terms of what it takes to convincingly pull off comic book looks via video game visuals. While the game's trailer doesn't feature quite as many visual touches as Comix Zone and some other games like it employed (such as panel hopping), Furious Jack's matte painting style backgrounds and written sound effects sure do hit the spot. 

One thing that Furious Jack does feature which some older genre titles do not is an emphasis on violence. Watching protagonist Jack Sawyer drop a shipping crate on full-time thugs that are now a stain on some poor dock worker's day is gruesome enough, but a later scene that shows him relentlessly stomping a baddie's head into the ground makes it clear that the foes that simply vanish from the screen are the lucky ones. 

Currently, Furious Jack is about $65,000 shy of its donation goal with 34 days left to go, so be sure to pay a visit to its Kickstarter page if you're interested in lending a hand.
