This gorgeous Unreal 4 demo isn't part of a larger game, but it should be.
The fine folks over at Obsidian Entertainment haven't officially been involved with the development of a Star Wars game since the release of Knights of the Old Republic II, but that hasn't stopped their senior environment artist Jason Lewis from assembling an impressive Star Wars tech demo running off of the Unreal 4 engine.
What started as Lewis' attempt to learn the Unreal 4 engine by creating some Star Wars related material soon grew into a pet project that several members of the Obsidian development staff began to contribute to. Rather than keep their work to themselves, they were gracious enough to convert the final results into a free download that you can find here.
This project, which doesn't even have an official name, doesn't allow you to do much more than just walk around the world that Lewis and co. created, but, in an interview with the website 80 Level who first spotted this download, Lewis noted that he's still pretty proud of what the team managed to accomplish with the final product.
"My goal was to build the most highly detailed real-time [Millennium] Falcon that anyone has ever seen, and I think I have pulled it off," said Lewis. "Except for maybe the Falcon model from the recent ILM X-Labs VR demo that was at GDC a few months ago."
Lewis did hint that there is a useable weapon somewhere in the demo, but most fans will be able to sufficiently entertain themselves by simply wandering the in-game world and taking in the impressive sights on display. Well, at least those with relatively high-end gaming PCs will be able to do so, as this project does require a pretty hefty amount of resources to even boot up.
While only the tinfoil hat crowd would dare speculate that this project is a hint at a future Obsidian Star Wars game in the pipeline, it is a pretty stunning reminder that Obsidian still houses one of the most talented groups of developers in the world.
