If Dragon Quest has a cult following over here, it's closer to a national institution in Japan. For proof, you should see the country's wildly popular museum exhibition, which celebrates 30 years of Square Enix's colorful RPG franchise.

Given that the series has long featured the distinctive character designs of the legendary manga artist Akira Toriyama, you can expect a lot of stunning artwork, but there's lots more besides that. We're particularly taken by the dioramas, which replicate classic scenes from the games with 3D models.

They're so detailed, we almost wish there was a Dragon Quest game that looked like a moving model village with hand-sculpted characters running around it.

The Tokyo exhibition ended on Sept. 11, but proved so overwhelmingly successful that it's moving to Osaka for a second phase in October. If, like us, you can't quite afford the price of a plane ticket, Gaijillionaire's YouTube video provides a fascinating guided tour.

Now, if only someone would stump up the money to bring the exhibition to the UK...
