Bungie has announced a new expansion for its online multiplayer shooter, Destiny. The expansion is called Rise of Iron and will explore the story of the Iron Lords, as players follow Lord Saladin on a quest to defeat a dark enemy beyond the Cosmodrome.

Bits and pieces of lore regarding the Iron Lords have been teased since the game launched in 2014, but the next expansion will be the first time players will be able to truly dive into the Plaguelands, where the last of the Iron Lords must eradicate a threat beyond the Wall, the same threat that killed all of his comrades.

Rise of Iron will add new story missions, strike content, a new raid, new equipment, an elevated light value cap, a new social area, and the return of the Gjallarhorn. A new enemy faction and bosses, as well as new Crucible maps will be added with the expansion. One new enemy you'll encounter is a cyborg-mutant version of the game's Fallen baddies!

Here is the expansion's cinematic trailer:

Destiny: Rise of Iron Release Date

Destiny: Rise of Iron Details

Destiny players who have been trying to squeeze every Rise of Iron press release and stream preview for all the details they're worth were gifted with a bonanza of new information today as tidbits have emerged from the interview Bungie recently gave toGame Informer concerning Destiny's latest expansion.

While not every detail disclosed in the feature has been made publically available, some fascinating details regarding the highly-anticipated Rise of Iron have been revealed and include:

- Remakes of old strike maps Devil's Lair and The Summoning Pits

- The return of Festival of The Lost this October as well as a new Sparrow Racing League season starting in December

- A new Crucible mode (Supremacy) as well as a new Horde Mode titled Archon's Forge. The developers also teased that Rise of Iron will include a "long-awaited" new Crucible feature that they have received numerous requests for.

-  Rise of Iron will also include eight new artifacts that all grant the player some kind of unique ability. Not every artifact was detailed, but Bungie did mention that one will allow you to gain control of enemies via melee attacks and that another will allow you to rid yourself of that nasty sprint lag.

- The new max light level is now confirmed to be 385, but that will be raised to 400 when the hard mode of the game's newest raid is unlocked.

- Speaking of that new raid, it's called Wrath of the Machine and is apparently just as good as the exceptional raids that have, thus far, arguably served as the highlight ofDestiny for many players.

Those who wish to purchase the issue and discover all the details for themselves (as well as call themselves the proud owners of a pretty sweet magazine cover) may do sohere

One of Destiny's most requested features will finally be implemented with the release of the Rise of Iron expansion as Bungie confirmed today at Gamescom that they will be introducing private matchmaking to Destiny's player vs. player matches.

When Rise of Iron debuts on September 20th, it will bring with it the long-awaited ability to create private PvP matches as opposed to wading through the public servers. Although this feature will not be available until Rise of Iron releases, players will not have to own the upcoming expansion in order to access it.

Bungie used a recent livestream to give fans a brief look at the customization options they will be able to implement as part of this private matchmaking feature, which includes the ability to change the map, score limit, time limit, time of day, and other aesthetical options. This blog post details how, exactly, you will be able to create a private match as well as the full range of options you will find once you have initiated a session. Also of note is a comment that Bungie made in a recent interview with Game Informer where they stated that this initial version of the mode is something of a test for the concept moving forward and that Bungie will explore adding additional customization options as the feature progresses.

The developer also confirmed the new multiplayer maps that will be featured in Rise of Iron  are Last Exit, Skyline, and Floating Gardens. Additionally, the expansion will introduce a new competitive mode called Supremacy which sees two teams of six do battle over crests that drop when players are killed. These crests grant points, and the team with the most points at the end of the match wins.

Although we're still waiting for further details on a few of Rise of Iron's features (most notably its new raid), it appears this upcoming expansion will indeed be Destiny's most significant release yet. You can catch up on everything revealed about Rise of Ironthus far in this all-inclusive developer diary Bungie has released to celebrate the next chapter of the game:
