It's called Sunless Skies and its developers already can't wait to tell you about it.

2015's Sunless Sea made quite the splash on the indie market thanks to its minimalist design, surprisingly deep roguelike gameplay, and unbelievable Victorian atmosphere. There really is nothing else quite like it.

Well, at least for now there isn't.

Developer Failbetter Games have announced that they are currently working on a sequel to Sunless Sea called Sunless Skies. As the name suggests, the main difference between the two titles will be the setting. Whereas Sunless Sea took players on an aquatic adventure, Sunless Skies will transport you to space.

According to the developer's highly informative blog post titled "7 Facts About Our Next Game," players will still be able to expect the same wonderful Victorian-era design elements, despite the change in venue, as Sunless Skies imagines a universe in which the Victorian Empire was able to stretch its reach beyond the stars. Specifically, it portrays a scenario that follows the Empress who has "abandoned London and led an exodus to the High Wilderness, to carve out a new British Empire." In the midst of this turbulence is the player; an outsider trying to scrape a living together however they can.

Furthermore, it appears that Sunless Skies will "elaborate on"Sunless Sea's gameplay and design as opposed to rewriting everything that came before. As some fans will be happy to hear, that means the original game's often "punishing" difficulty will return. It will be available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, have its own Kickstarter campaign (starting in February), and will incorporate influences from authors like H.G. Wells and C.S. Lewis as well as movies like Event Horizon

Failbetter Games are currently in the pre-production process and, as such, are not able to confirm a release date for Sunless Skies at this time.
