A series of four shorts from Divergent screenwriter Evan Daugherty based on Super Marios Bros. have begun hitting the web. The series, which Daugherty is calling The Four Players, shows a grittier side to Nintendo's popular Super Mario Bros., depicting Mario as a power hungry plumber and Luigi, named simply "Lou" in the shorts, as a drug addicted fiend.While Mario texts Lou "SHE NEEDS US.", Lou is struggling to his addiction to mysterious flowers in his basement lab.
“Making these short films gave me a chance to really ‘do my own thing,’ while having a little fun treating one of my favorite video-game properties with a darker vibe,” said Daugherty. “I had been kicking around the idea for years before I was even working in the industry, so to finally be able to share these films with fans on Polaris is a very exciting thing.”
The first two shorts, The Fixer and The Addict, debuted thismorning on Polaris's YouTube channel, which we've embedded for you below. The next two shorts will be focused on Princess Peach and Toad, named The Star and The Soldier, respectively, which were released today. They're definitely worth the watch, even though they may be a tad on the stranger side of things!
