Is a third-person shooter even Gears of War's final form?
Considering that it helped create the template for the modern third-person shooter, it's hard to imagine Gears of War as any other type of game. If Phil Spencer and The Coalition's creative director Chuck Osieja are to be believed, however, the franchise may yet explore other genres.
Gamespot is reporting that Osieja and Spencer were asked at Xbox Fanfest whether or not Gears of War would ever be expanded into another gaming genre. Spencer reportedly told Osieja that he should be careful with his reply before Osieja gave the following response:
"At Microsoft, we evaluate all opportunities for our franchises. So, if the right opportunity presents itself, we'll explore that as something we can offer our fans."
Spencer elaborated on Osieja's simplistic statement by stating that "Definitely when we got the team together and talked about the future of Gears of War, I think there's multiple ways that you can tell that story. I think it's a really big IP and it's an IP that could exist in linear form, in books--we've seen that; in different gaming genres."
Although neither man went on to say which genres Gears of War may be translated into, the fact that Spencer was especially cautious of the question has some believing that there may already be such a project in the pre-production stages (if not further along). As for what that project could be, everyone has theories. While most agree that a Gears of War kart racer isn't likely to happen, it's not too hard to imagine that a real-time strategy game or Gears of War HoloLens title could one day come to pass.
Of course, Gears of War 4 will remain a classic Gears of War experience when it launches on October 11th for the Xbox One.
