Ashes of Ariandel will add a brand new multiplayer experience to Dark Souls.

Update 2 - 10.13.2016
Proving that the Ashes of Ariandel expansion won't just feature content aimed to please solo Dark Souls players, Bandai Namco have released a new trailer for the add-on that focuses entirely on the game's co-op and competitive multiplayer options. The most interesting piece of this trailer is certainly the footage at the end that showcases a brand-new competitive arena option that will mark the first time Dark Souls has ever incorporated a more traditional multiplayer experience. Dubbed Undead Matches, this new mode will support up to six players who can engage in all out brawls or participate in team-based battles.
Update 1 - 09.21.2016
Dark Souls III: Ashes of Ariandel was on display at Tokyo Game Show, and, while you'll still have to wait until October 25th to play it, From Software and Bandai Namco were kind enough to share a new video that shows what wonderful horrors await those ready to step once more into the breach.
Original Story - 08.24.16
FromSoftware and Bandai Namco have confirmed the rumors that have been circulating recently regarding the impending release of Dark Souls III's first piece of DLC by revealing the announcement trailer for the upcoming expansion Ashes of Ariandel. See if you can spot all of the moments that you'll die trying to beat this expansion in the video below:
According to the game's press release, Ashes of Ariandel will not only make excellent use of title alliteration but take players on a journey through the land of Ariandel to defeat the mysterious evil that has corrupted the land. This expansion will include new weapons, armor, and magic, as well as some fresh new features for the game's multiplayer mode.
The team behind Ashes of Ariandel are remaining appropriately cryptic regarding exactly what new items and features this expansion will introduce to the game, but the trailer does hint at a few new abilities that include a boomerang magical attack capable of hitting enemies twice as well as an AOE firebreathing ability that seems to finally turn your torch into an instrument of fear. It would be surprising if that ends up being the last of the fire-based abilities introduced in this expansion given that the world of Ariandel appears to largely consist of ice, snow, and some monstrous new bosses that will likely up the difficulty level of the game as previous bosses in franchise expansions have done.
The official announcement for the trailer also makes brief mention of a second Dark Souls III expansion set to release in 2017, but there are no further details about that project available at this time.
As for Ashes of Ariandel, that is set to release on October 25th for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. It will retail for $14.99, but those who choose to purchase the Dark Souls III season pass will be able to access both it and the upcoming second expansion for $24.99.
