Phil Spencer believes it is not in the best interest of the company to constantly debut consoles.
In an interview with Game Informer, head of Xbox Phil Spencer addressed previous claims that Project Scorpio will bring an end to console generations as we know them.
"I don’t have this desire to every two years have a new console on the shelf; that’s not part of the console business model, and it doesn’t actually help us," said Spencer. "The best customer I have is somebody who buys the original Xbox and just buys all the games...I don’t have a need to get you to go buy the newest console, or I don’t have the need to create an artificial loop of, 'Here’s a new console every two years,' in order to get you to go buy."
Spencer later explained that the reason behind his somewhat vague stance at the moment is that he's unsure what the future of the Xbox brand is beyond Scorpio at the moment.
"To be completely honest, I don’t know what the next console is past Scorpio. We’re thinking about it," said Spencer.
So what is the intent of Project Scorpio in terms of the future of console gaming? At present, Microsoft still intends for Scorpio to be a high-end alternative for console gamers. Spencer does not believe that the Scorpio will be able to keep pace with PC gaming in terms of sheer performance.
"The best-looking version of Battlefieldis going to be PC. Somebody’s going to be able to throw enough hardware at Battlefield to get it to outperform what any of the consoles on the market are going to do...I would say at the broadest sense that I don’t think most of the console players think about it that way. It’s just, 'I get to play Battlefield. It’s fun and I’m having a good time playing it on my television.'”
There is still no release date or price available for Project Scorpio.
