Update 1: 11.03.16

The Final Fantasy game that Takashi Tokita was teasing recently is now known to be Final Fantasy Legends II.

There isn't much information about this game beyond the brief snippets of text shown during its Japanese reveal trailer. However, everything that has been revealed thus far suggests that this will be a new adventure designed exclusively for iOS and Android. It's unknown if it will directly continue any of the events depicted in the first Final Fantasy Legends game (also known as Final Fantasy Dimensions in the West) or tell an entirely separate story.

Original Story: 10.28.16

While all Final Fantasy fan's eyes were focused on the game's rapidly approaching 15th installment, Square Enix stealthily sent out a tease regarding the franchise's mobile future.

Gematsu first spotted a recently launched subsection of the Square Enix Japanese website that contains the characters "FF_NEW" in the URL. This page currently displays "5 Days" in English while the Japanese text beneath that reads: "Final Fantasy is about characters filled with human appeal. About dramatic battles of anger and sadness. And more than anything, we should not forget that it is about fantasy."

It's certainly worth noting that the above text is attributed to Takashi Tokita; director of the all-time great RPG Chrono Trigger and lead designer on Final Fantasy IV.Throw in the Android and iOS logos included at the bottom, and it's safe to start assuming that we're five days away from hearing about the next Final Fantasy mobile game.

What's especially interesting about that possibility is that Square Enix is quickly running out of old Final Fantasy games to port to mobile platforms. Tokita's wording, as well as the websites audio and visuals, suggest that this will be a classic Final Fantasy experience, but there's nothing on that page that specifically points to an older game.

If indeed Tokita is working on a new Final Fantasy mobile game, it will be the first classic-style new Final Fantasy title that he has worked on since the 2010 mobile game Final Fantasy Dimensions. In recent years, Tokita has been focusing on new endeavors for the company as well as mobile ports of old Final Fantasy games.

We will be sure to update you on this matter when the countdown ends in five short days.
