The franchise could be facing a premature end.
Despite the overwhelming amount of glowing reviews the game received, developer Respawn Entertainment isn't sure if there's going to be a sequel to Titanfall 2.
In an interview with Glixel, Respawn Entertainment's co-founder Vince Zampella had this to say regarding the possibility of future Titanfall games:
"We don't know yet. The game is, critically, a huge success. We're really happy with all the reviews and the positive sentiment. Sales, it's too early to tell. We'd definitely like to tell more of the story and the universe. I think it's pretty safe to assume that we'll explore more of it. EA might have announced more."
At the end of that statement, Zampella called for EA publicist Devin Bennett, who was present for the interview, to confirm what EA's official position was regarding the Titanfall franchise. Bennett stated that "What we've (EA) said is we're committed to the franchise."
To this, Zampella replied, "So, whatever the fuck that means."
It sounds like all may not be well in Titanfall town. While EA has not released any official sales figures for Titanfall 2, the general consensus seems to be that the game is struggling to match the success of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and EA's own Battlefield 1. On the subject of whether or not Battlefield 1 and Titanfall 2's relatively close release dates impacted the success of the game, Zampella stated that he "of course" would have rather had that release window all to himself. As for Call of Duty, he noted that it "definitely feels a little odd" that a franchise he helped to invent was used against his latest creation.
Respawn had previously announced that all future Titanfall 2 DLC will be released for free to everyone who purchased the base game. As such, we know that there is more Titanfall 2 content on the horizon. Beyond that, the fate of the franchise might very well be a toss up.
