The Mortal Kombatreboot is one step closer to reality, with Simon McQuoid signing on as director. If Mr. McQuoid's name doesn't immediately ring any bells, you may have seen his work already anyway, as he's a well-regarded TV commercial director, having done work for Playstation, Halo, Beats by Dre, and others.

James Wan is producing the new Mortal Kombat movie. Considering his horror movie roots, that's a good fit. A key part of the appeal of the Mortal Kombat mythology is the horror elements and the overall spookiness of the Outworld. Along with Wan, Michael Clear, Todd Garner, and Jeremy Steinare producing, with Lawrence Kasanoff as executive producer.

Greg Russo recently completed a draft of the screenplay, and it's not clear if anything remains of the work done by Oren Uziel (who wrote the well-received Mortal Kombat: Legacy web series) and Dave Callahan (The Expendables). Here's the little we know about the story of this one, courtesy of a report from The Tracking Board from last August:

The new Mortal Kombat movie "centers around a seemingly harmless guy who realizes his potential when he finds himself caught in the middle of a cross-dimensional battle between the warriors of Earth and the monsters of Outworld. Now, in order to stop the world from total destruction, he must win the martial arts tournament known as Mortal Kombat." Reportedly, the new film will feature "darker, brutally real martial arts." Whatever that means...it probably is just an indicator that this one doesn't have a feel good techno soundtrack. An awesome one, I might add.

Who is this "seemingly harmless guy" supposed to be? Liu Kang?
