Nintendo's next console may continue their recent motion control tradition.
While many assumed that the Nintendo Switch would feature motion controls given that the concept was featured prominently in the design of the Wii and Wii U, nobody from Nintendo has actually confirmed that the Switch controllers will incorporate any kind of motion support.
Now, an executive from GameStop may have beaten them to the punch.
During a recent investor's call, GameStop CEO Paul Rines began to speak at length about the Nintendo Switch. On the subject of whether or not he believes that the Switch will reach a broad audience like the Nintendo Wii did, Rines had this to say:
"A movement-related game is more fun for kids, you know, taking those accessories off, you can really do a lot of interesting things with that in gameplay."
As IGN notes, it appears that GameStop executives might know more about the Switch than anyone who doesn't work at Nintendo. They have recently been commenting on their expectations for the console from a sales perspective as well as alluding to certain capabilities. Furthermore, Raines has stated that he has personally played the Switch and feels that it has "tremendous potential as a game-changer."
However, his statement is a bit vague in relation to whether or not the Switch's default controllers are motion-based. It's possible that is the case, but it's also possible that he is comparing the Switch's unique capabilities to the way that the motion controls on the Wii expanded gameplay options. Furthermore, it could be that the motion controls he is referring to are part of one of the Switch's unannounced accessories.
As it stands, however, this is the first time we've heard anyone with intimate knowledge of the Switch refer to the console's controls in such a manner.
