The publisher will instead focus on expanding the Battlefront series.

Ubisoft isn't the only major publisher and developer taking a break from their cornerstone franchises, as EA is now reporting that we may not be getting another Battlefieldgame for quite some time.
This news comes to us from EA's CFO Blake Jorgensen who recently spoke to the Nasdaq Investor program. During his speech, he commented on the fate of two of the companies multiplayer shooter franchises moving forward.
"We won't have another Battlefield back for a couple of years," said Jorgensen. "Next year we'll have Battlefront, the Star Wars game."
According to Jorgensen, the reason that EA wants to focus on the Star Wars franchise is because there "seems to be no waning in the excitement around the Star Wars world." With the next major entry in the Star Wars film franchise coming out next year, EA wants to make sure that the Battlefront series is able to meet all fan expectations.
"We were very excited about how Star Wars came out last year," said Jorgenson in regards to 2015's Star Wars Battlefront. "It's a beautiful game, people loved it. I think if there was criticism they just wanted more. And so we're taking that criticism to heart as we build the next game and trying to address any of the issues that they had."
As you may recall, some fans felt that 2015's Battlefront represented a step back from the franchise in terms of pure content. Several modes featured in the previous installments (including a dedicated single-player campaign) were missing at launch. While Jorgensen specifically commented on EA's desire to incorporate all of the upcoming Star Wars content into the future games, it's quite possible that this shifting of resources will allow them to expand the scope of Battlefront once more.
It is sad to see that Battlefield is the victim of this shift in focus. We had a lot of good things to say about Battlefield 1in our review, and the franchise appeared to be back on track. Hopefully, it will return ahead of schedule.
