Retro puzzler BoxBoy is getting a second sequel for the 3DS called Goodbye! BoxBoy! We even have the trailer to prove it...
BoxBoy! is one of those quiet, unassuming games that sits on the 3DS eShop begging to be discovered. Beneath its cute, 8-bit graphics lies a pleasantly taxing puzzler in which different kinds of blocks are used to traverse increasingly complex levels, all accompanied by catchy yet soothing music. A sequel, BoxBoxBoy!continued the theme, and now, developer HAL Laboratory has announced that a third game in the series is coming out next year.
Called Goodbye! BoxBoy!, it offers another round of sneakily difficult levels for its hero Qbby to conquer, and its minimalistic design looks as charming as ever. So charming, in fact, that Nintendo's announced that it's giving the series a physical release in Japan, with all three games packaged together on one cartridge together with an adorable-looking Qbby amiibo. The boxset - brilliantly, called BoxBoy! Boxed Box - will also include the games' soundtrack on CD.
At the time of writing, Nintendo hasn't said whether it's bringing the BoxBoy!set to the US or UK. If it doesn't, the Qbby amiibo is likely to end up as yet another Nintendo item that fetches absurdly high sums on eBay. I mean, look at the little fella:
All we know right now is that the BoxBoy!boxset is out in Japan on Feb. 2, retailing for 3,456 yen - or about $30, according to our very rough calculations.
If you haven't played the first two BoxBoy!games yet, they're on the eShop right now for a mere $4.99, and well worth a download. For one thing, they're from the team who brought us the Kirby and Smash Bros. series, which accounts for the game's superb level design and cuddly character details. If you enjoyed the indie classic Thomas Was Alone, you'll probably fall for BoxBoy's charms, too.
