The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon played host to the first TV demonstration of the Nintendo Switch and Super Mario Run...
You've probably seen and read a few things about the Switch by now. It's Nintendo's successor to the Wii U, a kind of build-your-own transform-a-console which plugs into your TV or unplugs to become a portable handheld device, and if you squint, the controller looks a bit like a cute dog with floppy ears.
Nintendo's set to provide more details about the Switch in January next year, not least its all-important retail price. But before that, Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime showed up on a recent episode of Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show to provide a brief demonstration of the Switch and what is likely to be its killer app, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
As a curtain-raiser to the new console, Fils-Aime also let Mr. Fallon have a quick go onSuper Mario Run, the forthcoming infinite runner app for iOS. Despite the added pressure of having Mario's dad in the audience - that's Shigeru Miyamoto, in other words - the host made a pretty good account of himself, all things considered.
As for the Nintendo Switch, there aren't any major revelations to be found here, but the demo's significant for being the first live tour of the device. You also get to see some new footage of Breath of the Wild, which is always nice - and unless we're mistaken, that's the biggest explosion we've ever seen in a Zelda game.
Super Mario Runmakes its debut on the Apple App Store on Dec. 15, and there's an Android version on the way too, though we don't yet know when that'll arrive. The Nintendo Switch will be getting a fancy press unveiling on Jan. 12, ahead of its global launch next March.
