Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite Trailer

If you weren't ready to get your hopes up regarding the rumored return of Marvel vs. Capcom until you heard something official...well, we hope that this official debut trailer for Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite is enough to convince you that a sequel is finally happening:

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite Gameplay

Not long after that trailer debuted, Capcom's Director of Digital Media & eSports took to the PlayStation Blog to share some details regarding the upcoming fighter.

First and foremost, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite will feature 2 vs. 2 battles as opposed to some of the previous installments' 3 vs. 3 clashes. To help make up for this alteration, Capcom will be adding a few new gameplay features to the series. Chief among them is the ability to utilize Infinity Stones which will each provide unique powers to your combatants. Furthermore, the blog seems to imply that the game's campaign mode will be much more robust this time around while online ranked multiplayer is set to return in full force.

Sadly, there has been no mention thus far regarding whether or not X-Mencharacters will appear in Infinite. Their absence does seem to suggest that the rumors regarding Capcom's inability to incorporate anything X-Men related in accordance with their Marvel licensing agreement are correct.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite Roster

Here are the characters that have been confirmed so far:

Captain America

Captain Marvel

Iron Man

Mega Man X

Morrigan

Ryu

X-Men?

APolygon report focuses heavily on the split at Marvel that supposedly precludes the inclusion of X-Men family characters from this installment. That would, however, fly in the face of Capcom's focus on their leadership in the fighting game esports arena: SF5 was admittedly rushed out before the game was completed so it could be featured at this past year's Evo fighting game tournament in Las Vegas, and producer Yoshinori Ono told Famitsulast week that the company has planned long-term support for the game to keep it at the forefront of the fighting game community.

With that in mind, it would seem out of sorts for Capcom to keep Magneto, who has been universally considered to be a top tier character going back at least 3 games now. And the focus on the ongoing anti-mutant discrimination at Marvel ignores the fact that Dr. Doom, a Fantastic Four character and an anchor on the teams that won or finished second at Evo in each of the last three years, is also potentially off limits.
